Gaelicum.A wont leave my pc alone...

Hi

Your forum helped me a lot of times and Im sure that this time will ones again!!!

For a few days now, Im getting this annoying virus alert from AVG (antivirus free version) about this infection Gaelicum.A

I have tried using Vcleaner.exe in safe mode, but it seems that this virus, trojan or whatsoever, is getting back via an alternatove route…
It seems that is suing the system restore and gets back again…

I turned off the system restore just now, i run the hijack log and i will post my log here..
After that, i will restart, and run vcleaner with safe mode and with system restored turned off…

I hope this can help in something…

Sorry for the delay :(

I am currently looking at your log and will have a reply soon.

However it is very important that you turn System Restore back on

System restore does not pose an infection risk, unless you have to use it because of a crash

Once you have done this, rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh log and we will get started

The first thing we need to do is install a Firewall, this infection propigates every time you connect to the internet.

Download and install ZoneAlarm, the link is below:

ZoneAlarm

Once that is done

Go here and Download Ewido Antimalware 4.0
(30 day free trial version) Save it to Your Desktop
 
Double Click Ewido-setup
(It will create its own folder)
Once the program starts You will be at the Status menuUnder "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive
Click Update now (next to last update)
After the update loads
Under Automatic updates Uncheck download and install updates automatically(recommended)
(you can always select maual updates the next day)
At the top toolbar Click Scanner Then the settings tabUnder How to act? Set default action for detected malwareTo Quarantine
Under how to scan All boxes should be checked
Under Possibly unwanted software All boxes should be checked
Under reports Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Uncheck Only if threats were found
Under what to scan Scan every file should be highlited
Exit Ewido
 
Reboot into Safe Mode
 
Run EwidoClick scanner
Select Complete system scan
Once the scan finishesSelect Apply all actions (The items found will be quarantined)
Click save report as (Another window will open)
Save it to your desktop
(By default It will be saved in the Ewido folder as)
C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports
Exit Ewido
 
Reboot your PC in Normal Mode
 Double click the report-scan txt. you saved to your desktop
It will open in Notepad
Copy and paste that report as a reply to this thread
Finally Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh log

Your reply should includeyour report-scan.txt from Ewido
a fresh Hijackthis log

I made the scan and nothing was found!
I hope it dissapeared… Although there are 2 files in the AVGs guarantine folder…


Anyways, I wait for your next advice…
Also i'd like to ask, if the softwares you have asked me to instale (Zone Alarm & ewido) are necessary for my pc, cause i think they are making my connection and fucntioning a bit slower…

You can remove Ewido when we are done, I do think you should keep Zonealarm as the infection you are trying to avoid, trys too reload on IE connection.

As far as speed we will improve that before we finish.

First a little house cleaningClick Start->>All Programs->>Accessories->>System Tools ->> Disk Cleanup
and run the Wizard
To make sure you are clean

Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.1. Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on "Next"->>"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as ".txt" to the desktop.
Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan

I would recommend that you use this tool to clean up with. As it will remove un needed junk from your PC. Be sure and do your Windows And Java Updates indicated in the follwing notes. Once this is done your PC should regain it's speed. However I do recommend again that you keep the Firewall.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.

  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions: Open Internet Explorer click Tools->> Options.
Click Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click Custom Level.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click OK.
If it prompts you to save the settings, press Yes.
Next press Apply and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page

I have done all the above, lets hope for the best! On my previous report, when i have done the virus scan, it showed that there are 2 viruses on my pc Scan Statistics: Total number of scanned objects: 80782 Number of viruses found: 2 Number of infected objects: 2 / 0 Number of suspicious objects: 2 Duration of the scan process: 02:56:13 But you said that it looks good… R u sure? I mean i know that you know what you are doing and saying but, the scan found the above results which is something that conserns me… Anyways, I have followed every single step you told me, I have updated java aswell, cleaned all my uneccesary files etc… Lets see….

Now if you no longer wish to use that program you can delete the folder mirc617.exe

Research indicates that it is a false positive by Kaspersky and a valid file see this LINK
