Securing Your PC After An Attack
i missed the whole of the buffalo tongue post…it was about the same time as i was posting i think. anyway probably just as well cos i'm a veggie and even have trouble with mozarella. (and i'm happy to do without the buffalo in exchange for a simpler fix!)

its such a pleasure to use a computer that actually works!

The monaco shortcut has lost its distinctive icon but is still there, although the destination file etc is now deleted….is it ok to delete the remaining trace on the desktop?

i'm posting another hjt log. I don't really want quicktime player to launch at startup or real player to keep looking for updates. Can I use the hjt entries to stop them launching? Why doesn't the internet settings process for applying a new homepage hold after re-launching the browser (it goes back to msn every time)? Is the active desktop message genuine?

haven't quite worked out how to drag these little geezers into the post but anyway thumbs up, big grin and many thanks.

Let's see if we can get the desktop back.

Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

[external image: Posted Image]

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:

c:\rapport.txt

Open that file with Notepad, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of it into this thread.

Why doesn't the internet settings process for applying a new homepage hold after re-launching the browser (it goes back to msn every time)?

There's a setting in Zone Alarm to allow you to change it.
:)
hi micah 6:8

Have re-run the smitfraud and I think it shows all clean.

I've assumed it was ok to do so and clicked the 'restore active desktop' button. This worked ok and I've now re-instaled by own choice of image……everything is fine with that.

I've assumed that the remainder of the 'monaco' icon was a desktop shortcut and deleted it without problem.

The only problem that I'm left with is that I can't set my own choice of homepage. This is manageable cos I have google toolbar installed so can divert there immediately but it is still annoying. I select 'tools/internet options', change my choice of homepage, click apply, click ok and then reselect 'tools/internet options' to find that it has already reverted to http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?p…&ar=msnhome
I've had a good look around the zonealarm control page but can't see anything that might be related to this. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

regards
stillwill

Copied from another post:

There's a setting in Zone Alarm.

Program control > Main > Program control > custom > OS firewall > Change internet explorer homepage.

If this is set to block (big red 'X'), then it's impossible to change the homepage. to fix, click the 'X' and change it to '?' (ask).

Have just downloaded the latest update for free zonealarm but still have no custom button on my program control/main/program control area (only in the automatic lock area). However the help file for zonealarm also mentions the same option as you have described. Maybe its available on the purchased version. However if its not available on my version presumably that means its not active in creating the problem?? I've tried disabling both the os firewall and closing zonealarm completely and then changing the homepage setting but it still reverts to the msn setting within one click. I'll register and post in zonealarm's own forum to see if anyone can throw light on this and return here later with any news. Stillwill
I was trying to change it using the top toolbar on the open browser window via 'tools/internet options'. However your question has prompted me to try changing it via 'start/control panel/internet options' without a browser window open and its worked! I know the hjt and smitfraud fix logs now appear clean and the thread may need to be closed but there is a new symptom which was repeated when booting up this time and I would appreciate any comment before signing off. This happens after windows is up and running and the desktop has all its tray items showing and settled. I then try to open internet explorer and the eggtimer appears for a second and then disappears for what seems like an age (actually it is too long)…so long that I then try task manager, which also gives the impression its not going to start. There's nothing showing for ages and ages and then both programs finally open. Once its got past that stage both programs will then open and close rapidly from then on…its just that first openeing is so delayed. It never used to be like that. Could there still be a bug or is it all the firewall/anti virus etc opening even after their icons have appeared?? I won't take offence if you think this is veering off from the thread territory but let me know if it indicates anything obvious. Regards Stillwill
It's been a few days since your last log was posted….

Let's do this:

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Browse to c:\fixwareout folder, Fixit.bat.

This will start Fixwareout again.

After the reboot, post:

1. The fixwareout report

2. A new HijackThis! log

Into this thread.

If nothing obvious shows, we'll try something else.

The re-boot this time was different….the tray icons took a much longer time to settle (zone alarm coming up last), the browser window then opened immediately on clicking but then took ages to actually load the home page, (although the broadband connection was up and running). I wonder if it could be avg, ewido and zone alarm all trying to look for automatic updates at start-up while at the same time the new higher speed type of broadband connection is taking longer to establish? Anyway if the malware side of things looks clear to you lets close the thread…many thanks for your help…the forums are a fantastic service and I'm certainly inspired to make a donation to keep up the good work.

Stillwill
