bamajim, Well, my computer medics guy didn't show up last night - he got hung up in Dayton. While I'm waiting for him, here's a question: Would the AVG anti-virus program (free version) have detected and fixed the Sasser worm variant you mentioned below? I ran AVG repeatedly both before and after the problem started, (it started during an AVG update). What about HiJackThis detecting it? Also, I may have the XP Recovery Disk after all - my wife informed me that she took it to work! I'll keep you posted, and thanks again. Torquemada
