Hi,

My computer has been running unusually slow recently (especially during start-up), and Adaware tells me I have 43 running processes even when it's the only program I have open. I've done CCleaner, Ewido, Adaware, Spybot, McAfee Virus Scan and defrag'ed it. What more can I do? Is there anything in the HT log (below)?

Thanks for any help!!

gdaymate, :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry for the delay in responding but we are to say the least , overwhelmed with logs.

Your log is hard to read , what I would like you to do is to open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, when it opens in Notepad, go to Format and make sure that Word Wrap is checked, then go to Edit> Select All….Edit> Copy and Paste a new log into this thread only by useing the Add Reply button and not the New Topic button.

Ken :D
Thanks for the response…Hope this works:

Good Morning gdaymate, :D

First off let me say hello to a fellow GATOR well, I am by marraige but my wife graduated in 82.

You have many windows system processess running all the time, they are needed for windows to run, its not just what program you have open.

Adaware tells me I have 43 running processes even when it's the only program I have open.

Your log looks clean, I dont see any Malware or Viruses on it. We can do a few things to clean out the gunk.

This will by default install the Yahoo Toolbar, you can remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel if you wish.
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

* Go to C:\windows\prefetch and delete all thats in that folder, but not the prefetch folder itself, you should be in Safemode to remove it all. If something wont delete, dont be concerned about it.

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Reboot back normally

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

You have Ewido installed, have it set up this way, run the scan and let me see the report, it may show something that is not on your log.

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
* Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine
* Under Reports
* Select Automatically generate report after every scan
* Un-Select Only if threats were found
* Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

* Lauch Ewido-Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
* Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
* Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
* Next select the Reports icon at the top.
* Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
*** make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
* Close Ewido

Let me see the Ewido report and a new HJT log please.

Ken :D

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the help. Here is my new HijackThis Scan Report followed by my Ewido Scan. Let me know if there's anything more I can do to speed this thing up. Maybe I need to delete some programs that run on start-up…

Thanks again,
Heather

Hi Heather,

Ewido is a great program but it also is a resource hog, so uninstall it via the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel unless you want to keep it. If you do, even though its a 30 day trial, you can still check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature which is the resouce hog anyway.

You have quite a bit starting up when windows starts, it all sits in memory just clogging you up. I am listing some things that you can stop from starting with HJT, you can always restore it with HJT by opening HJT > View a List of Backups and restoring whatever you wish. I am listing also what they do, this is totally your call on what you stop from starting up.

This can be done manually by going to the Control Panel and click on the Little Coffee Cup Jave Icon and check for updates yourself.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe

SIS graphics cards related: "Super VGA Keyboard Daemon" - hooks into the keyboard processing chain in order to enable hotkey settings.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS Windows KeyHook] C:\WINDOWS\system32\keyhook.exe

StorageGuard from Veritas (this version by Sonic). Free utility that integrates with Backup MyPC (formerly Backup Exec Desktop), Simple Backup and MS Backup. Provides system tray access and background monitoring - warning you of files that haven't recently been backed up. Required unless you backup manually on a regular basis or have scheduled backups
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r

A multimedia software, and program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. Found in many manufacturers of Personal Computer.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe"

A process belonging to the Cyberlink PowerCinema video viewing software which allows you to play DVDs upon insertion. Non-essential process - and is installed for ease of use
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"

You can start this manually when you want to use it
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] c:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe

Network Associates Error Reporting Tool - tool traps errors and requests submission to NAI for the purpose of betatesting new software
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Network Associates Error Reporting Service] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\TalkBack\TBMon.exe"

You can do this manually
ScanSoft OmniPage auto updater. Can be disabled using the main program's options.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot

This is not needed at start up
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
