I'm just a newbie in this forum, and i'd like to ask something about my PC. why evrytime i turn-off or shut-down my PC, it takes a lot of minutes before it turn-off? From the time that i click the "TURN OFF", i think it takes 20-30 sec..before its totally shutdown my PC….My "OS" is winXP Pro/SP2…is there something wrong about my PC? I already did some scanning. like scan it first with Ad-Aware SE, and then to make sure that no spyware or malware will be missed by scanner, i scan again with Ewido. The last scan will be my AVG Anti-virus…and all the test or result is CLEAN and GOOD… And to make things more sure that my PC is in good condition and not in bad or error, i check for some disk error and disk defrag. it 2x - 3x a week… Is there anyway that i can speed-up shutingdown or lessen the time it takes whenever i turn-off my PC? I'm hoping for some advice or Tips & Tricks on how to resolve my Q?… Thanks in advance guys & gals….
I cant really give advice as i aint no pro but my xp takes probably about the same time as yours(20-30 secs)to shut down BUT as soon as ive hit shutdown im OFF so not really concerned with how long it takes to shutdown…. WITH all the possible problems one CAN get im just happy my PC`s COME ON in the first place to even be in a position to shutdown again…… I know that too many programs and services in your startup can cause a slow startup SO i can only assume that the same might be the case on shutdown?????????(msconfig???) Im a newbie to pc`s full stop(5-6months)..BUT,with the help of these and a couple of other forums (AND quite a bit of reading)….iv`e so far managed to fix ALL the problems i have encountered….NOT to mention creating a few new ones along the way………AND ive had some major problems(for newbies)…… SEE what the experts tell you…..they`ll get round to you at some point(busy people when IM around.lol)
Hi Generation X If your machine only takes 30 seconds or so to shut down then its doing well. Don't forget it has to do a lot of things and write a lot of data to disc between executing the shutdown command and final power off. If you are defragging your drive 2 or 3 times a week then this is generally considered far too frequently and will tend to cause excessive wear on your hard drive leading perhaps to premature failure. If your hard drive becomes unduly fragmented after only a few days then you must be creating/moving/deleting a huge number of files on a regular basis. If you are not, then it might be a good idea to use the analyse feature on defrag and find out the degree of fragmentation before committing to a defrag and only proceeding if there is a high degree present.
