I know you are swamped so I have been doing some fixes on my own. I have the PC back to running normally, no more 100% CPU usage. McAfee spamkiller is now enabled (something kept disabling it). Could someone take a moment and check over my latest HJT log to be sure I don't have anything else lurking behind the scenes? Thank you. Bundicks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log after the below fix:

Next, launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the BOLD REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\obbn13t.dll]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\psksds.dll]

On the desktop, doubleclick fix.reg and allow it to run. Let it merge.

Please download the Fix_Protocol reg file from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/Nel/FixP.zip and unzip it to your desktop.
Double click Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
MyWebSearch
SrchAst

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two

Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your help. I did as instructed, report and log appear below. I ran some programs on the PC and it is responding well. The CPU performance is normal, Windows programs (word, excel) are responding normally. The only issues I have at the moment are ~ when running spy bot SD, Adaware personal, ccleaner - they all get to a certain point and hang with program not responding. Don't know if McAfee spamkiller might be the culprit.

Double click "My Computer" then your hard drive (probably C drive) and open the C:\WINDOWS folder. Go down to the "Repair" folder and double click. You should find "autoexec.nt" in there. Copy this file (Ctrl+C) then go back to C:\Windows\SYSTEM32 and paste it there (Ctrl+V). It will ask you if you want to replace the old one—click "Yes". That should do it. Now try running the program spybot.
Thank you again for your help. I did as instructed. Interestingly enough the "Autoexec.nt" file was missing from c:/windows/system32. Spybot is running now but VERY slow (only up to 2 bars in 45 minutes), ccleaner "check for issues" still stops responding within seconds of pushing the button, the windows and applications cleaner part works fine. Have not tried adware yet.
Maybe it is McAfee that's causing the problems.

Log looks good :D
