Hi,

Working on my sister's computer. Apparently months ago she had some sort of hijack problem with her Google Toolbar. She removed the toolbar, which seemed to solve the problem.
I just checked the Virus Vault of the AVG program; it shows a total of twenty-four trojans detected/removed in April-May. Scans have been clean since then, but it looks like there are some items related to a "Wareout" virus in the HJ log. Need advice on what to eliminate.
Updated Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE scans came up clean, other than a few cookies. I tried a Panda scan, but it didn't complete. I may try a Housecall scan while I wait a response from you knowledgeable folks.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

Bye.
Welcome to the forum :wavey:

You do indeed have a "Wareout" infection.

Before we deal with that, I'd like to check something.

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.
:)
Hi, Thanks for the quick response. Wish I'd checked back earlier. Here's the strtup list (cool feature).

File association entry for .EXE:

(Default) = "%1" %*

————————————————–

That looks OK.

One of the bad" files you have doesn't look like "Wareout", so I was checking your "file associations".

They are normal.

Please download FixWareout from one of these links:
Fixwareout.exe
Fixwareout.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

* Save it to your desktop and run it.
* Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
* The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
* You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
* Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
* Once the desktop loads a text will open (report.txt). We'll need that in a bit.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):
(Note: Fixwareout.exe may have removed some of these)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Also open this file with Notepad:

C:\fixwareout\report.txt

And paste it's contents into your next post.

:)
Hi Micah, Thanks for the help. Before I continue: I just downloaded and ran Fixwareout (note: your second link, the geekstogo one, didn't work); after restart it went through the fix, but no report.txt opened. Any way I can access it? Also, there's a new icon in the sys tray called "Stickyfingers". eta. doh! nevermind…I see where you indicated how to access the report. I'll continue with you instructions.
Press the "Shift" key five (5) times in rapid succession.

A menu should come up to let you turn "Stickykeys" off, or change it's settings.
:)
Cool. I'll try the stickyfinger fix. In safe mode I'm not finding and of the usual .exe suspects (I've tried searching that underscore ____ one a few different ways :-) I have found: PARISM.JP_ in windows\options\i386 and parism.jpg in system32\oobe\html\mouse\images Should I delete those?
Homepage changed to MSN, and access to other web sites is pretty slow now.
Check that - seems better now.

Here's the new HJT log:
