I have been using Cloud Eight as my start page but wished to temporarily change it to Google. However using Internet Options failed to make the change. Letting Google choose to make itself the start page didn't work either. Hijack This listed the item as first on the list and although it said it would delete it, in fact it couldn't. I have tried to delete/change the item in the registry but get the message that I am unable to modify this entry.
Have run Ewido, A squared, Avast, Ad- Aware, Spy-Bot S&D, Registry First Aid, CCleaner etc. etc. but to no avail. System appears clean. Getting really frustrated with myself for being stuck with such an apparently simple problem.
Please help.
Thank you. (Last part of log removed as it overan the permitted character length.)

Hello and welcome

Try this:
use ALT/CTRL/DEL (all three at same time)

end the process for Sandboxie.

Now try changing your start page
Thanks for your suggestion. Sadly it didn't solve the problem. However there was a change inasmuch as I didn't get the error message when I tried to change the start page manually from regedit. Hijack this acted exactly the same, that is appeared to work but made no changes. It must be something similar to Sandboxie that is preventing any changes to my start page. Everything else I have SpyWare Guard, Scottie, Zone Alarm etc. normally bring up a screen asking if it OK to make changes. Perhaps I will have to try deleting all of those to see what is causing the problem. Thanks anyway for your response.
Do the same as I posted but end the task for
Control.exe

You could also try Add/Remove Programs and remove sandboxie
Control.exe is not running or doesn't show with Ctl, Alt & Delete. Removed Spyware Guard, AVAST and Zone Alarm but didn't help.

Removed Spyware Guard, AVAST and Zone Alarm but didn't help.

You need to put those back, you'll get a bad infections and really have problems.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://thundercloud.net/start/index.htm
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SandboxieControl] C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\Control.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete this Folder.
C:\Program Files\Sandboxie

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK done all that. As you will see, Hijack this still is unable to change/remove the start page.
Machine appears to be running normally, not noticeably slow or anything like that. I am just annoyed that having changed my start page to this one because CloudEight reckoned it helped them financially, that I cannot seem to change it back again.
I only disabled Zone Alarm, AVAST and Spyware guard long enough to see if it made a difference.

That's weird

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://thundercloud.net/start/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Now there's an odd thing. When I opened in safe mode I automatically logged in as user Administrator. To my surprised I saw that the deafult start page was msn.com I restarted the machine in safe mode again and this time logged on as my usual user name. Now the start page was the original one that I had been trying to remove all this time. I ran Hijack this and it appeared to work. I checked with control panel, internet options and sure enough the url was blank. I inserted a new url and everything is great again. I must admit I rarely have found the need to load in safe mode so I suppose I had tended to ignore the facility. Normally, when I load, because I am the only user I have my machine set to boot fully without intervention. As a consequence I missed what I suppose was an obvious step. Thank you for your time, your patience and your knowledge.
