Hi, my laptop is slow, particularly the internet connection. It shouldn't be, it's new(4 months), a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 1gb of RAM, however other people had access to it for a while, I suspect something nasty is present, could have come in via Limewire or MSN. My old desktop in the UK is MUCH faster but I have never permitted P2P networks usage on it. I have ZoneAlarm Security suite, it finds nothing.
Have been using the program control section of ZoneAlarm to reduce program permissions in the hope of getting the speed back.
Of course, it could be c*appy Swisscom being slow, everything else about their service is 3rd-world.
I would really appreciate some help.

Anyway here is my Hijackthis log, at the time I ran this I had killed Limewire in Taskmanager. That helps a bit. I'm afraid the log is mostly double-dutch to me…..

Hello startg, welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:

LimeWire
iTunes <–Unless you use it.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cleanup] C:\DOCUME~1\Geoff\LOCALS~1\Temp\200656105721_mcappins.exe /v=3 /cleanup

Unless you use iTunes
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

This is Windows messenger NOT MSN messenger
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Quick Help.lnk = C:\Program Files\Bluewin\Quick Help\bin\matcli.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi.
Thankyou for your reply. Good of you.
I followed your suggestions except that I use Itunes. Happy to disable it's access to the web except when I open it if that's possible.
I was also(ahem) using Limewire a bit myself, though I didn't install it. Is there no way of using it safely? The ZoneAlarm suite is a good one, right? Yes I know p2p is bad karma and all that.
The computer is simply slow - web pages load incredibly slowly, almost like using dial-up. Before I got the Swisscom broadband I had dial-up and onspeed, the speed was similar. It also appears to be slow for some non web-based applications.
My 2 year-old UK desktop can handle 30 open internet tabs in Avant browser - this machine struggles with 2, and even with just one it's slow.
Here is the new log anyway….. I have to go to bed - will look at this page tomorrow Thanks again.

Limewire's newest version is free of scumbware, it's the files you download that can be infected. You can get it, but like iTunes, there's no reason for it to load on startup. I'll look at your log and see what else we can do. Sleep well
What are you using for a Anti-Virus program?

These are all optional.

You need to update your Java

Be sure to keep SunJava, updated

In Add/Remove programs click on these and press *remove* if listed:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 - 97.99Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 - 143.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 - 144.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5- 151.00Mb
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04 - 130.00Mb
Or any other outdated J2SE

It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them. You will be surprised when you go to add/remove to see all of the versions sitting there.

Download Newest >>>> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed >>>>

Sun Java Test

Sun Microsystems has fixed five security bugs in Java that expose computers running Linux, Solaris and Windows to hacker attack.
Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. I use ZoneAlarm Security suite for antivirus, firewall, spyware etc and recently added Ad-aware for extra spyware protection. I followed your instructions except for the Onspeed uninstall and onspeed-related HJT deletions. Are you saying that Onspeed might actually be slowing the browser? It definitely appeared to speed it up when on dial-up. Struggling to install the new Java as you suggest. Problems with ActiveX controls(even though I tell the browser to install the Java website activeX control) so I tried the manual download, that failed as well with a message saying "The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." Any ideas? Thanks startg.

If you're still using onspeed, then keep it.
Try to disable ZoneAlarm temporily and then update Java.
Hello, I tried switching off ZoneAlarm Security suite then executing the Java download - no luck. The same error message…. Any more ideas? Thanks, startg.
With IE open: Click Tools> Internet Optioms> Securty> Custom Level ActiveX controls and plug-ins * Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt) * Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable) * Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable) * Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled) (This actually refers to Java and Flash, not ActiveX) * Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt) If that still doesn't work, try disabling any Anti-Virus / Firewall that you have running. I'd unplug my internet connection first.
