My computer is always running at 100% even if I'm not using any programs. My Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) shows that my computer is 100% all the time, which really slows everything down. I never had this problem before, this "slow down" just developed recently. My CPU Usage used to hover around 5% when I had no programs running (aka Idle), but now it's almost always at 100%.

Here's my log:

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Did you know there's a "keylogger" installed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [class454~@#] C:\Program Files\XP32\class454.exe

Is this:

Spyware.XPSpy

No I did not know there was one installed. This is a huge shock to me, I feel violated. Is there any way to tell when it was installed and how it got there? What info was stolen and any way to prevent this from happening again?

Find this folder and <right-click> on it:

C:\Program Files\XP32

Look at the "Creation date"

That will tell when it was installed.

Anything you've typed or looked at since then is compromised.

That answers "when".

The only way you can answer "who" is to think of who had access to the PC at that time.

Before I make any suggestions on "fixes", I just want to be sure that you want that program removed?

Yes, I want it removed. And how do I prevent this from being installed again, is there some program that blocks installation of keyloggers?

We'll start with a "basic" removal and see how the system performance improves.

There are other programs running that are unnecessary that we can remove if you want.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [class454~@#] C:\Program Files\XP32\class454.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\Program Files\XP32 <--- FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread.

It says that logged keystrokes are stored here:

c:\xp32.dll

You can open it up with Notepad (I presume) to give you an idea of logged keystrokes.

<right-click> on it and rename it to xp32.txt before opening with Notepad.

When you are finished, you can delete that file at your convienence.

The software may be able to periodically "flush" that file, so It might not contain every keystroke logged.

As far as "prevention" of future ocurrences....

XP has the ability for "user accounts". These accounts have "system privileges". If you give only your account "administrator" privileges, and all other accounts don't have that "privilege", I don't think they can "install" software.

That would be one way to minimize the possibilty of this happeneing again.

I look at the "running processes" with the Task Manager every day, and make HijackThis! log periodically just to see what's "cooking". I know what's "good" and what isn't.

When we get finished, you can make a HijackThis! log, and save it or print it out. If something "new" shows up, you'll be able to spot it right away and check it out.

Before I delete these, can you tell me why they are bad? O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

They aren't "bad". They're just not essential processes.

"Fixing" them with HijackThis! doesn't delete them from your system, it just stops them from running when you boot up.

The programs are stil there for you to find/run with Windows explorer if you want.

realsched.exe info

qttask.exe info

You said your system was "slow", so I'm suggesting removing a few unnecessary items.

There are a few more we can remove if this doesn't help.

Okay, I did everything you said and I have a new problem. Several programs are loading during the startup process that aren't necessary. For example, kazza is loaded during startup, steam (my half life account) is loaded during startup, and some kind of Earthlink subscription is loaded during startup. How do I choose what programs I want to be loaded during the startup process?

You could use MSConfig, or some other software.

Startup Control Panel - This program allows you to control your startup programs in a way similar, but superior to Microsoft's MSCONFIG (which was not included in Windows 95/2K). It does not check the run= and load= lines in win.ini. The standalone version is highly recommended, the control panel applet is not.

I haven't used this program, personally.

kazza is loaded during startup

I'll tell you just like I've told everyone else lately.

There's been some really "nasty stuff" being spread by "Peer to Peer file sharing" methods recently.

Be afraid... Be very, VERY, afraid....

I finally figured out what's causing my computer to slow down (maybe), but I don't know how to fix it. Okay, here's the problem in a nutshell: My computer only slows down when I open my "Shared" folder. Inside that folder is 1 mpg video that I downloaded from limewire. As soon as I double-click to open the "Shared" folder my computer slows down to 1/50th its normal speed and the "CPU Usage" instantly spikes to 100%. And once that folder is open you wouldn't believe how frickin' slow my processor becomes. Now this is all from just me opening the "Shared" folder and not the video file. And the only way to make my comp. act normal again is by using my Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) to "End Process" and close the "Shared" folder, which brings everything back to normal speeds. But here's where a twist happens. I thought maybe my video file, which is located inside the "Shared" folder, might be causing this problem such as a virus or something, so I thought I should delete it just in case. But for some reason the video file won't let itself be deleted, because every time I try to delete it - it says "File cannot be deleted because it's currently in use". But I've checked and rechecked, the file is NOT being used, uploaded, downloaded, or anything else. I even went as far as too uninstall limewire, then restart into safemode, then shut down my internet connection, and then finally try to delete the video file - but I still got the same error message. So, I have no idea what to do next :(

Please post the "full path name" (i.e. "C:\Documents and settings\owner\My Shared folder\connotdelete.mpg") of the file you cannot delete.

Download/unzip Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Close all open windows/programs!

Now, run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\Documents and settings\Dan Keating\Shared\MTVclip.avi

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the machine reboots, look in this folder:

C:\!Killbox

If the delete was successful, the file should be in there.

As soon as I click the red dot, KillBox freezes. And the Task Manager shows that KillBox is "Not Responding", and the only way for me to close KillBox is by clicking "End Task". When KillBox froze after I clicked the red dot, I waited 15 minutes before I clicked "End Task", because I thought there was a chance that KillBox was just running extremely slow - since that video file seems to cause slow downs. But my guess was wrong, because believe me KillBox was completely frozen and not just running slow. So, what should we try next, because this darn video file is fighting hard to stay alive.
