[hitpro]

My laptop has been acting erratic lately(about the same time as my pc started). My pc is wired, and my laptop is wireless. I keep getting pop-ups(from adult friendfinder, to a security scan window) when I click on a link or open a new session of IE. Also, I cannot open 2 sessions without one freezing. I'm puzzled

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You have a couple of nasties, follow these directions.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is out of date and that will get you infected fast. Use this information to fix that security breach:

2) ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log and your comments. How is the computer running now?

I did what you suggested but still no change. I am still getting pop-ups advertising a "SysProtect" installation(naturally, I close the windows), and I'm getting a notice asking if I want to download "WinAntivirus". And freezing still happens.

Silly me... i forgot to mention in my original post that Norton's Antivirus found a virus called "bloodhound.exploit", but couldn't fix it. When I went to where the file was supposed to be, I couldn't find it.

OK and thanks for returning this information. Please do post all information you believe may be relevant.

I can not work with the log spaced as you have it. Click on Format in Notepad, turn off Word Wrap and post all logs singled spaced. Repost this one and I'll take a look.

Once you post that log, then let's try this:

Download and run SysProtect Remover.exe:

Once it is running click the "Remove Now" button and follow the on screen instructions. Post the results for me.

Yeah, thanks...your ewido scan is showing nothing that was found and could not be cleaned, and your HJT log is clean also. The tool I suggested you use is for the SysProtect item you are being troubled by. What were the results of running that tool? Thanks

Well, try it again, I have not used the fix before but Atribune's fixes usually work very well. Did you restart the computer after you ran the fix? Often that must be done.

Use your search companion to search for Sysprotect and WinFixer, if it locates any instance of either, let me know where they are located. Take a look in your Add Remove programs for any item you know does not belong there and uninstall it. If you are not sure let me know and I will look.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.

Now click on Scan Settings

In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives

Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Sorry for the delay. Latest news. My cousin came over and we were talking about my problem. He had the same problem a week ago. He told me to check out VundoFix. It's apparently by the same company(Atribune) as the SysProtect Remover.exe program you suggested. I downloaded VundoFix.exe, ran it, and in 1 hr of surfing I have not had a pop-up from SysProtect. Hopefully it's fixed. Do you need to see any logs from me to be sure? Or should I wait and see if the problem is actually gone? Should I still do the online scan? Note: how safe is online scanning? Do these companies have access to your pc? Are they able to log what's on your computer, including programs, passwords, files, and IP?

Sounds good, actually I use Atribune's VundoFix all of the time, but you had no evidence of Vundo. I am also aware that there is a new version that does not show in the logs. The SysProtect item threw me off a little and the Kaspersky scan would probably have show the Vundo trojan. Looks like teamwork got it this time and my thanks to your cousin. Tell cuz free training is available if he wants to learn more about malware removal. Your logs were scanning clean and it is up to you if you want to look at the the results of a Kaspersky scan. Your computer should be clean, I will leave you with this information:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
