Hello last week I downloaded songs from Limewire...which turned out to be fake and installed some viruses on my computer it seems...

everyone time i load my computer i see a white A on a black background show up for 1 second in my quicklaunch tray in the bottom right corner...and then a box that says "freeprod.com" is now loading... pleast wait...

I also cannot open task manager or regedit from "run"...and norton antivirus liveupdate will not update..it just gets stuck while loading...but norton does seem to pick up threats such as "adware. ____" with various names filling in the blank

Also some weird notepad program has been installed on my computer...called "Great Memo" that showed up out of no where...i'm not only one who uses this computer and I am positive I did not install this...as I use "post it" notes for my note program.

Also I have noticed a bunch of weird .exe filed being generated in my C: drive...most consistently one named "defender"

Also when i first got the virus, limewire kept opening itself, and whenever i closed it, it would come back...so i uninstalled it

Here is my HiJackThis log...thank you so much..

Hi,

Welcome to TC :)

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 1 minute. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of Look2Me-Destroyer.txt in your next post.
Next, lets get rid of the Alcan Worm.

1. Please download Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Install ewido anti-malware
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

    You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • In the scriptline to execute field type or paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt.

Danny :)

Alright I encountered a few problems while doing the things you told me to do.

1. Look2Me went very smoothly
2. Ewido - I had already downloaded this before you told me too and had already done a full system scan in normal Windows XP mode. I encountered a problem while doing this...I had over 13000 infected files after the scan was finished. But after it said 100%, these windows kept popping up saying "C:/Tommy/DocumentsandSettings/Complete...etc." could not be removed because it is archived in the path or something, do you want to remove the entire archive?" And then there was either Yes or No. I picked No, then 14000 more of these little windows popped up one after the other...So I left my computer on overnight and put a stapler on the enter key. I woke up and my computer stopped at 7000 and froze...so I could not get the save log or anything. This exact same thing happened in Safe Mode when you told me to do it...so it happened twice...and I find it quite odd to have 14000 infected files...and yes I did check "perform this action for all infections" for the first infection...the windows that popped up were different than the first one, there was even a typo at the end saying exactly "Dou want to delete the entire archive?" (Dou was intentional i my part)

Also Ewido seems kind of...weird...it keeps asking if Norton Antivirus, IE, FireFox, Warcraft 3, are malicious files..when they are obviously not...

3. The BFU went fine in safe mode

I have the new HijackThis log and my Look2Medestroyer log...but no Ewido log

Hi,

Are you sure you ran the BFU script?

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Next, Open HijackThis, click the "Scan" button, and check the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.fin...siteyouneed.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchbar.fin...siteyouneed.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://searchbar.fin...siteyouneed.com

O4 - Global Startup: taskmgr.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis, and click the "Fix Checked" button.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Go to the Start Menu, and click on "Control Panel". Choose "Add/Remove Programs" and remove any of the following that are listed:

Toolbar888

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:

1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Next, delete the following files/folders (if they exist):

C:\defender25.exe
C:\Program Files\ipwins
C:\newname25.exe
C:\keyboard25.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Programs\Startup\msconfig.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Programs\Startup\taskmgr.exe

Please search for and delete the following file:

b.exe

Reboot, and post a new HijackThis log.

Good Morning sillysmurf :D

Sorry for the delay but Danny is away and if your don't mind I will be taking over for him.

There still appears to be one issue we need to address.

Open HJT Scan Only, cllose your browser and all open windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: Internet Explorer Web Content Catcher - {FFF4E223-7019-4ce7-BE03-D7D3C8CCE884} - C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DNS] C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-110-12-0000140.exe

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-110-12-0000140.exe

* Highlight all the files with the complete path in the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

* Open Pocket Killbox
* Go to File > Paste from clipboard
* Set it to Delete on Reboot
* Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
* If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
* Make sure ALL Files is selected
* Click on the Red circle with the white X
* It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
* It will ask you to reboot, say yes

In referernce to Regedit

* Click Start>Run
* Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
* Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
* This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Post back with a New log and let me know if you are having any issues??

Ken :D

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one
AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents downloads and (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine, this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.
