I’ve been working with an older PC loaded with Windows 98 that was badly infected. I have most of the problems cleared, with Spybot and Adaware, but need a little help with the rest. The PC will not turn off but instead just re-boots itself when I try to shut it down. I have to press the on/off button and hold it in to turn it off, well, Windows hates it when I do that and wants to run a disc scan whenever it turn it back on saying something like Windows was not shut down properly because of that there may be errors on your disc.
Please have a look at my HJT log and help me get this PC cleared and back up to par.

Thanks for your time, and also again for your help in the past.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have junk that needs to go, but I am not sure it is causing your shutdown issues. Here is some information you can review:
http://support.micro...b;EN-US;q239887
http://www.pcpitstop...ss/shutdown.asp
http://www.aumha.org.../a/shutdown.php

Moving on to the HJT log, move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm

This program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\VIEWPOINT\VIEWPOINT MANAGER\VIEWMGR.EXE Please see this information:
http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
http://www.greatis.c...viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywarein...4.php#viewpoint
I suggest you uninstall it in Add Remove programs. While you are there uninstall any other program you know does not belong there. If you are not sure about something, let me know and I will look.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZUxdm020YYUS
O16 - DPF: {70522FA2-4656-11D5-B0E9-0050DAC24E8F} - http://cc.iwon.com/c..._12_1,0,2,5.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help. How is the computer running now?

Thanks...pskelley

Thank you for taking your time to help me.

OK Viewpoint is gone and I followed the rest of your instructions. I still have the same shut-down issue where the PC re-boots rather than a shut-down.
This PC was at one time part of a network. (maybe why it won't turn off) Now it has a new owner and I'm trying to use it at home.
This PC also had both Symantec and McAfee installed at the same time. I thought those two were working against eachother and have since removed both as best as I could but still notice a McAfee entry in the HJT log. I searched windows explorer for all things McAfee, Norton, and Symantec related and deleted all files with those words on them.

What to do with this one?
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [McVsRte] C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE.COM\VSO\mcvsrte.exe /embedding

I am now using zonealarm firewall and avg virus scan as you can see.
I don't see anything in add/remove programs that need to come out as far as I know. I do however see, because this PC was part of a network, there are many things not accessable any longer such as word, excel, powerpoint etc that are not installed on this PC but the paths remain.
Can I remove them via startbutton > programs and then just right click and delete?
PC appears to be running much faster. CCleaner did wonders.

When I click start, directly above the shut down option is another option: Log off xxxxx(previous owner? name. Could this have something to do with shutting down as I do not know his password to log him off. How do I get rid of that previous user account?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I am going to suggest you post here:
http://forums.tomcoy...hp?showforum=83 to see if they can help with your shutdown problem.

The HJT log looks fine, you should be able to remove that line like this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [McVsRte] C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE.COM\VSO\mcvsrte.exe /embedding

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Then navigate to that folder: C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\MCAFEE.COM\ <<< folder
and delete it.

If you want me to look at the programs to see if anything should be removed, do this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Can I remove them via startbutton > programs and then just right click and delete?

You should be able to, they are just shortcuts. Have you checked in C:Program Files\ to make sure the programs are no longer there.

It is hard to tell how they may have configured the settings for shutdown with a network? Hope the folks at Other Computer Problems can help.

Thanks...Phil

Thank you again for your help and sorry for the delayed reply. I followed your instructions about the MCAFEE.COM entry and think I got it. I looked in program files and did infact find office there, but when I click any programs (word, excel. powerpoint, etc) I get this message "This application must be installed to run. Please run set-up from the location where you origionally installed the application". Can you tell me what folder I need to find to re-install and where that folder might be as I has said this is an second owner PC and office was installed fron the previous owner. Please also forgive my ignorance as I am not PC savy. I would prefer to have all of office available for use. I do have the Windows 98 disc. Did office come as part of Windows 98 ? Here is log you requested; Ad-Aware SE Personal AOL Instant Messenger AOL Toolbar 2.0 AVG Free Edition CCleaner (remove only) HijackThis 1.99.1 HP DeskJet 830C Series (Remove only) Intel® 536EP Modem Drivers and Utilities Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools Microsoft Outlook Express 6 Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 Verizon Online Verizon Yahoo! I see no problems in the uninstall list. The questions you are asking me are beyond my knowledge and I would only be quessing. I am going to quess that only Windows 98 is on that disc you have. You would need the original installation CD that came with the computer, that would have the programs that were paid for when the computer was purchased. I wish I could help more.

I did see a few free programs that might help?
