i have done the hijack this start up thing and its still slow i dont know what to do now

Can you give us a little more information please..? Like what OS (Windows XP, 2000…etc) how much ram do you have… CPU speed… etc..etc

Yes…. yes thats surely one way to go about it. If your running XP, you have services to contend with… as well as startup applications. You can gain ALOT of performance by tweaking these, however, you must becareful doing so.
