A-squared instructions carried out. Below is a new HJT log and the scan report from A-squared. The only report of my system that still seems fishy to my programming-ignorant self is that I still get an error message at startup concerning saice.pif. Is that something to be concerned about? Thanks, once again, for getting me one step closer to clean. I'm ready to utilize the suggested safeguards in the forums once I'm spyware/virus/trojan/etc free.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2579.html

Next you neeed to clean out your system restore. You can do that by turning it off then back on

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:

NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" as shown in this illustration:
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
8. Proceed with what you need to do; for example, virus removal. When you have finished, restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives."
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Cleaned, cleaned, and restores deleted. Ran McAfee AV, found the Zquest trojan hiding in !Killbox. I do still have a problem of something DEselecting the window I'm currently using. I get both the 'You're about to view something over a secure connection' and language installer boxes. Any clues there? Sorry if I'm in the running for the #1 most-infected of the month award. :(
Just bumping to first page if anyone has any ideas to finish off this removal/cleaning process so I can install the safeguard software. I know Siggyx can't do this stuff 24/7. ;)
:( Not trying to be a pita, but my audio infomercial intruder is back. :( The only changes I've made were to load up ZoneAlarm and Firefox(which I like MUCH better–have to take my head out of the sand more often). Anyhow, just providing more info.
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
Once saved… double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
Wait for it to finish.
If it displays any items…don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl….big number
Please post contents of log.
Here is the Blacklist log. I will add, if it helps, that the warning box 'You are about to enter/leave a secure connection' seems to be a part of this mess with the audio intruder and the continuous situation of seeing my top window de-selected. ZoneAlarm warned me of a program with banners.search(something or other) trying to access the internet. It disappeared before I could read the whole thing and it's not in any logs I can find. That may be extraneous info, but thought I'd throw it out there. 06/04/06 23:12:35 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.37 initialized 06/04/06 23:12:35 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2) 06/04/06 23:12:36 [Note]: 7019 4 06/04/06 23:12:36 [Note]: 7005 0 06/04/06 23:12:45 [Note]: 7006 0 06/04/06 23:12:45 [Note]: 7011 656 06/04/06 23:12:45 [Note]: 7026 0 06/04/06 23:12:46 [Note]: 7026 0 06/04/06 23:12:50 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1015 06/04/06 23:13:07 [Note]: 7007 0
I have been reading some of the other posts in this forum(yes, I know that's dangerous for a novice). I seem to be having a very similar problem to Dusan, one of your other personal projects. I have taken no action outside your instructions other than running ewido and a-squared prior to your Blacklight step. Nothing found in either.
Hijack log after running Microsoft malicious software remover. It found no infections. I'm wondering if this could be related to google, Internet Exploer, or Quicktime/ipod. I have been avoiding IE and google so far tonight and haven't noticed the pop-up noises, secure connection boxes, or audio commercials. Anyhow….

Definitely seeing the same problem as Dusan. In his most recent problem post in this forum he described exactly the problem I am having. It involves banners.searchingbooth .com. I'm not sure how this thing intitiates itself, but that is the only problem left with my system, that I know of. Persistent little bugger whatever it is.
hmmmmmm yes I am reading booth.

Ok lets do this

Please download hoster from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Open Hoster.exe.

Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"

Close program when complete.

NEXT

Download THIS file to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

NEXT

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task .
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button , your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.

I do apologise. I was called out of town again and had limited time for anything else. Please post an up to date hijackthis log and let me know how things are running at the moment. I am catching up so I will not be able to respond until tomoorrow night.
EDIT:::: I do get an error at startup concerning saice.pif. I don't know if that is a problem or not. Been leaving it alone until all the spyware stuff is settled. END EDIT::::

Hi. No need to apologize. I haven't had much time lately, either. I just appreciate your assistance.

In the last week I have not heard or seen any recurring popups, though I did get one for casalmedia. I think it had something to do with the weatherchannel website and it hasn't been back.

I will say I have not used Google or Quicktime since the last scan/cleaning. I do not use IE much, either. I have been using Firefox, instead. I don't know if not using any of these is helping keep things more secure or just a coincidence.

I have also loaded and am using ZoneAlarm, Spybot S&D, WindowsDefender, and Spyware Blaster. McAfee AV, Spyware Doctor, and Prevx1 are also running. I seem to lose a lot of usable memory for some reason which eventually locks up my keyboard, but that was happening before all the spyware. It is especially noticeable with games like WorldofWarcraft and DnDOnline. I will probably be dumping Prevx1 at the end of the free trial.

Anyhow, here is the latest Hijack log. I have run several scans over the last week with all the programs above and they have found nothing at all.
