Hi:
Could someone please tell me how to remove or disable the this DOS screen?

C:\WINNT\System32\SNMP.EXE

I can reduce the screen, but cannot close it. If I try to close the screen, it come back double.

I have a screen print of it at my website below.

http://members.memlane.com/ascahill/Nag%20Screen.htm

When I run HiJackThis, it does not show in the scan, but SNMP.EXE does show in the text file generated by HiJackThis.

I'm not sure what type of file this is. Could someone advise?

Thanks
The Deli Chef
Hi Deli Chef,

As you probably know:

The process called snmp.exe is used by Windows applications when communicating with network devices using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP is used to perform remote administration of network hardware such as Routers and Hubs. Snmp.exe is required for your system to remain stable, you should not terminate this process.

Therefore, it is not a security threat, just a nuisance that you can't close it.

Have you attempted to close it via TaskManager (cntrl-alt-delete — End Process)?

Edit: Nice Desktop Background picture. What river is this?

Edit for the Second time: Microsoft shows some knowledge based articles on this Process in Win2000, which suggest that "other types of problems" have been fixed by getting the most recent updates and patches for Win2000 from the Microsoft Update site. I'm not saying this will "fix: you problem, only that it might be a good idea to make sure your Operating System is fully updated.
Hello Dough: Thank you for the information. I will leave well enough alone… I have tried to end the process via the TaskManager, but it comes back again right away. My system is up to date, but I will search Microsoft for further information. My desktop background is a stream near Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island. My wife's nephew lives there and it was taken March of 2005 Thanks for your help.
I think of Vancouver Island as one of the most beautiful places on earth, though I haven't been there.
We grew up in southwest Washington State. Everybody else in the family has visited Vancouver Island, but me. Maybe some day.

You might want to check to see if this item is starting automatically in your StartUp files.
Unfortunately, Win2000 does not have a System Configuration Utility like XP.
But all is not lost!
Win2000 will run the System Configuration Utility imported from XP or from a simple download, here:
http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm

If you identify the item in the StartUp or Services, consider disabling it, by "un"-checking the box in front of it.

While you're at it, enjoy the addition of this new utility that will help you run a lean machine by turning off all the extra/unnecessary stuff that may be loading at StartUp.

If you are unsure about what to turn off and what to leave on use the reference sites at

Your SNMP.EXE may or may not be important to have running to manage your local area network.
It may depend on whether or not you need "remote management". Experiment.
If this computer is part of a larger network or part of your work/employment environment, consult your IT department or the people who manage the Network.

Best Regards
I downloaded the MS config file, ran it and reviewed Services and StartUp I could not see SNMP.exe in either of them. My desktop is only connected to my laptop, so no great area network there… I do not get this DOS screen on my laptop. The config file will come in handy though for turning off other applications. Thanks again for the suggestions.
Deli Chef,

My desktop is only connected to my laptop, so no great area network there…

In that case, you may want to take a look at the utilities that you've used to set up the network and/or your network connection for your Laptop.

the SNMP.exe provides for "Remote Access Management" of the local area network.
I wouldn't want that feature on my home LAN.
Too much vulnerability involved.

Best Regards
