Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 10:31:57, on 28/05/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Problems/symptoms:-
Yesterday I lost a complete album as when i played each track it somehow got permanently overwritten, similar things have happened (not permanent) like changing dialogue boxes and seeing the same information.
random freezing, requires reset button (been happening for over a year but now worse)
very slow to shut down, often have to use power button
occasional random slowness of system in general
I ran the "error killer" free sample and it found 700+ errors, I don't mind registering but can't see any feedback on this site about it. Is it any good?
I run Trend 12 AV, and Adawre and spybot regularly
any help will be very gratefully recieved
Your "error killer" looks like a Registry Cleaner. There are tons of them available, of various qualities.
I know nothing of this one, though the free download sites rate it well.
It is not unusual to have alot of "errors" in the registry. Most will be missing or invalid links to addresses where documents, files, and applications have been saved, moved, deleted, uninstalled, etc.
It's a good idea to clean up your Registry since your Operating system has to "read" all of the entries when it loads and when it accesses applications for loading…… And it reads the whole registry with all the items, whether or not they are valid. So accumulating a bunch of invalid entries can consume additional loading time and slow down your machine.
At first glance, I doubt that your "disappearing files" problem will be corrected by cleaning the registry….. but it might.
Others here may recommend others.
What you need is a thorough, reliable utility, with a good track record.
You can pay money for a Registry tool if you want, or use a good free one.
Note: Read up on your Registry BEFORE making changes. And always have your utility Back-up the Registry before making changes.
Please keep us posted on your progress with your main problem.
Hi Dough
Thanks for the link, I've downloaded and cleaned my registry.
Since posting I've run Ewido as per instructions in the HJT forum, that found 2 entries for "backdoor.agobot"
the other thing I'vr done is, hoovered out the inside of my PC. that does seem to have made a difference to my lock ups (not solved them). My CPU is now running in the high 40s rather than low 50s as before.
A couple of other things I've noticed:-
Lock ups do seem worse when running things like adaware etc, even locked up running Ewido in safe mode yesterday.
SpyboySD never finds any problems!
Deleting little things like shortcuts can take 10 - 20 ses
in view of the infection found by Ewido do you think I should I be posting a HJt log (in the correct forum)?
Thanks again
