I need some help in stopping popups on my WinXP machine. I have Symantec Internet Security 2006 installed and have additionally tried SpyBot and we're still getting an annoying amount of popups.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop. (rightclick on this link and choose save as, if using IE save target as)

• Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
• Click "Next"
• In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
• Click "Browse"
• Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
• Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
• Click "Make New Folder"
• Type in BFU
• Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
• Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as, if using IE save target as)
• Place qoofix.bat in your C:\BFU - folder. (Important!)
• Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
• Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
• Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
• After the PC has restarted please post another hijackthis log.

Please bear with me little eagle. Now I can't get on the net with IE. Any ideas? I'll download Brute Force Uninstaller on this computer and move it over to the infected box along with HJT. Download WinsockFix.zip. © Option^Explicit.
UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)

Uninstall webHancer from control panel >> add remove program if listed there.

Download LSPfix here

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of
whiehlpr.dll

and nothing else, to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

Reboot in safe mode, instructions here.
Some of these files my have hidden atributes.
Click Here Should you need instructions for Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Once in safe mode, Click start / then my computer / local disk then follow the process tree.
Or using Windows Explorer, locate the first file right click then select delete.

Delete the following file(s) listed in bold.
(do a search for this one. It'll probably be in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32.)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\kevun.exe

Delete the following folder(s) listed in bold.
C:\Program Files\webHancer

If you still have lost Internet connection then run WinsockFix.exe. Click the Fix button.
This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database.
After the program is complete, reboot and your problems should be resolved.

Here's the current status:

I can now get on the net. When I went through the steps, there were a few things that didn't quite match. First, in the LSPfix step, the file whiehlpr.dll wasn't shown. Second, in the HJT fix, 02-BHO.... and both 04-HKLM... entries were not there. Last, when in SafeMode, the search for kevun.exe only returned the file C:\windows\prefetch\kevun.exe-2D8808FB.pf. I did not delete it.

On to the original popup removal steps. When I ran the Qoofix, there was a message like "...regedit not a valid program...." and a couple of "access denied" messages, but the restart window showed up as expected in about 5 minutes.

Download ATF Cleaner instructions here.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
Run Pocket Killbox, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
Paste or type in:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\tufqnt.exe

into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot click Yes.

And let the system reboot.

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

When I ran KillBox I got the error: "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by External Process!" and it didn't reboot. I went ahead and did a reboot.

Log looks clean. One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus or spyware infection. There can be backups made in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus or spyware removal. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. 1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK.
