I've used this tutorial:
http://forums.majorg...ead.php?t=38752
Ive tried that numerous times on numerous computers...but I never get HJT to remove everything. I end up using multiple tools and nothing ever works os I have to reload the computer. I figured since assistance is offered in Toms "quick start" thread, Id come in here and give you guys a shout. This time Ive tried Adaware, Spybot, Mcafee anti virus and anti spyware, A2 (A squared), AGV anti virus, and manual removal...Im still having IE pop ups while Im using FF. I told IE to use a fake proxy so it wouldnt be able to access the net but I still get blank pop ups. I also hae a fake system message that comes up every few minutes trying to get me to buy some anti spyware and anti virus stuff. I havent done anything with HJT this time because I want to give an expert a chance to see it from the beginning. I know Im supossed to give it a shot before I post my HJT log but believe me, Ive tried it at least 5 different times and I never get it to work. (I just havent done it THIS time yet)

DeputyMoniker,

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry about the delay but we are overwhelmed with logs.

If you have not resolved your issue and still need my assistance, move HJT to its own permanent folder and post a new log please as your system may have changed since your last post.

Please keep in mind that removing the wrong entry with HJT can make your system inoperable.

Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Hello Again,

You may want to print this out and have it handy.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

* Download Roguescanfix from here:Download it to your desktop.
Doubleclick roguescanfix.exe
Click the 'install' button.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called Roguescanfix.
Open that folder and doubleclick: Run.bat

Note: This tool needs internet connection because it downloads an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
In case you still get the message BFU.exe is not present, download BFU.zip from here.
Unzip it and place BFU.exe in the Roguescanfix-folder. Then doubleclick Run.bat again.

The tool will uninstall some programs and delete related files and registrykeys.
When some files won't get deleted, it will ask you to reboot your system to delete the files after reboot.
Please make sure the uninstall of the programs are finished before you click Yes to reboot.

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

Post back with a new HJT log, there will be more to do.

DeputyMoniker,

URLs change as fast as you change your socks :D

Try this one if you need it CCleaner

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

I just need to see the report from Smitfraud

OK, your still infected, the Roguescan only fixed part of it.

You may want to print this out or save it to Notepad to your desktop because we will be offline for part of the fix.

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware
Ewido Anti-Malware
* When installing, under Additional Options uncheck
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program <-- Dont run it yet

Now reboot into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut off Your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to Safemode
* Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Now open Ewido
o Click on scanner.
o Run a full system scan
o Let the program scan the machine.
o While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
o Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
o Click Save report.
o Save the report to your desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Please post:
  • c:\rapport.txt
  • Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis log

DeputyMoniker, :D

Smitfraud cleaned the infection real well, Ewido found a few things , mostlly cookies and cleaned them all up, your log looks good :thumbup:

I am just concerned about this entry, do you know if your ISP uses a proxyserver?? You need to call them and find out, this could also be related to your file sharing program.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = ddgdfg:1

How are things running now, any problems, if all is ok, I have some tips and free tools for you to install to help keep you more secure on the internet.

Good catch but I typed that proxy server in there. My malware was accessing the net through IE so I told IE to use a fake proxy...that prevented it from accessing the net. What ended up happening was Id get a bunch of blank pop-ups. Im really impressed. How did you learn all this? Do you read HJT logs off the top of your head or do you have to get online and see what the entries mean? Where can I learn? My comp is running fine now. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!

DeputyMoniker,

Glad things are working well :thumbup:

Tom Coyote has a classroom for people that are interested in fighting Malware, if your interested you can read about it here Classroom

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one
AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents downloads and (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine, this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for Stopping by Tom Coyote, I am glad I was able to help you clean your computer.

Ken :D

Thanks for the advice! I just sent my email to sign up for the classroom. Ive been an IT for 6.5 years for the Navy. Im new here so Ill keep my fingers crossed about getting into the class. Id really like to help fight malware. Doesnt it seem like people should be able to sue these malware guys? I mean there should be a law ststing that every "product" must include an uninstal option supported by the control panel. This just isnt right.
