Hello, I'm posting my HiJack log in hopes of identifying and ending my seemingly endless popups. Some background: this is my (15 y/o) son's machine which wouldn't even boot into safe mode. I've cleaned this unit a couple of times before, but I'm stuck on this one. I got everything cleaned except O20: Winlogon Notify xxxxxxxx - C:\Windows\System32\yyyyyyyy.dll. HiJack says to fix it, mark it for deletion on next reboot. When I do, there is simply another dll there with another name on the next restart, and the xxxxxxxx name may also change. From browsing the System32 folder, there looks to be many, many of them with similar naming conventions. I have a feeling this is where my endless popups are coming from. Mozilla pops open and connects to an number of ad-displaying sites on a regular basis. Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated.

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task .
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button , your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button .
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK .
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK .
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339'. please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32. Directory

Hello and thanks for the reply. In the meantime, browsing some of the other posts, I took advice and downloaded ewido and cleanup, and ran both of them in safe mode. That cleaned up everything except Adware.Look2Me and WinAd. I then took another suggestion from a post and downloaded SpySweeper (alas, I could not find a free version, but the computer didn't have any real [meaning updating] AV sw, so I bought a subscription), and that cleaned up the last two and even came up with a couple more Trojans. So I am presently up and running. I also added the free version of ZoneAlarm as a firewall. I appreciate the reply, and really appreciated the information contained herein. I am knowledgable enough and confident enough with computers to attempt the fixes and was happily successful. The computer was in such bad shape that I figured if I wasn't able to fix it, I would reload the sw in any case! Again, thanks for the reply, advice and especially this forum. Until I started searching around the Web, I had no idea of the amount of forums devoted to malware and spyware, and even more suprising, the amount manned by folks such as yourself willing to spend additional hours to help others. Cheers!

Glad your system is clean :)

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
