Norton AV keeps detecting:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Download.Trojan
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\khhhe.dll
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
Computer: RACHEL
User: SYSTEM
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Access denied
Date found: Sun Apr 30 13:29:05 2006

however, khhhe.dll cannot be deleted in any mode.

Cannot boot into safe mode, as WindowsExplorer aborts instantaneously after starting. I can boot into SafeMode w/networking and unplug the lan.

Frisk (Fprot) detects:

w32/proxy.kk, ranky.sq, downloader.mcy all in files that are named c:\windows\temp\dwhXXXX.tmp where XX are alpha and NNN looks like hex values

Winfixer.com is constantly trying to install itself

Have run ewido multiple times and the quarantine contains a ton of stuff
downloader.adload.j (adef.exe)
dropper.agent.hl
downloader.vb.uc
and much more

1. Please download http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install ewido anti-malware
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/

2. Please download http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. http://metallica.gee...alcanshorty.bfu and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
In the scriptline to execute field type or paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

thank you for your prompt reply. I could get really spoiled by getting a reply in under three hours.

If you look at my original post, you will see that I have already run ewido multiple times. I cannot run it in safe mode however, as I cannot run anything in safe mode because Windows Explorer aborts. That means I have no desktop, no start button... nothing. If I manually start "explorer" from a run command, issued from the task manager started by ctl-alt-delete then Windows explorer starts, but survives less than one second.

Whatever I have is stopping me from proceeding in safe mode.

However I did just complete a run of Ewido in normal mode, and here is the result:

Please download VundoFix.exe from here:

http://www.atribune..../click.php?id=4

and save it to your desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

Checkmark the box "Run Vundo as task"

You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK

When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button

Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.

You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.

When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.

Turn your computer back on.

NEXT

Please do an ewido scan and then post both logas.

Go to add/remove programs and look for NewDot.Net or New.Net and remove.

NEXT

Download TheKillbox from here http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip Save to your Desktop and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\WINDOWS\config\svchost.exe

Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

During one pass of HJT, the program indicated that a certain problem (newdotnet) could be removed with Spybot. I downloaded and am running Spybot now, and it's indicating coolwwwsearch is present it found 154 items including smitfraud, and others I've encounters on others' machines over the years. many of these were latent, I am sure. But I'll go thru multiple cleans with Spybot, then post new HJT and ewido logs here. thanks
