Hi
Ive started having loads of pop ups and big images appear on screen which i cannot get rid off!
I would be very grateful of any help as its driving me crazy!

Hi Jillica,

Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder. This is because HijackThis makes backups of what it fixes, so it needs to have it's own folder to ensure that the backups and program don't accidentally get deleted.

To make a permanent folder, open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\ Click File > New > Folder... and name that folder HJT. Then extract hijackthis.zip to that folder.

You have a Look2Me infection. Please print of these instructions or save them as a text file because you won't be able to access the Internet for part of this fix.

Update Ewido to the latest definitions, but don't run it yet.

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.

Close all windows before continuing.
Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run this program as a task.

You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.

You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
Your computer will then shutdown.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

Turn your computer back on, but after the beep (but before Windows loads) tap F8. On the menu that appears, choose Safe Mode.
  • In Safe Mode, load ewido and click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Check "Perform action with all infections" and "Save an encypted backup".
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
  • Restart back into Normal Mode.
With your next post, please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt, the Ewido log and a new HiJackThis log.

Thank you very much for you help but to be honest, I found many people who have the same problems mine, and followed the advice given to them, (which by the way was exactly the same advie as you have given), and have managed got rid of it! Thanks again, I really appreciate it! Jilly :)

Hi Jillica, thanks for posting back. Your HijackThis log looks clean :)

Below I have included aa number of recommendations for how to prevent future malware attacks. Please take these seriously as they will help prevent the majority of infections.

- Keep Windows up-to-date.

Many malware attacks occur through security holes in Windows, and Microsoft regularly releases patches for these holes.

If you haven't updated your system recently, please click here to visit the Windows Update site, and install any high priority updates available. It's important to keep checking this regularly. It's possible to schedule automatic updates so that updates will automatically be found and downloaded to your system. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep Windows up-to-date.

- VERY IMPORTANT: Use a firewall.

I don't notice a firewall running in your log. A firewall is your first and last defence against malware and I would say is the most important piece of security software you need. The Windows XP SP2 firewall does not block outgoing traffic, so for this reason it is not recommended. Some excellent free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Outpost.

Only install one firewall on your computer, as multiple firewalls will clash. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

- Use antivirus software

Remember to keep your antivirus up-to-date and perform frequent scans with it.

- Use antispyware software

Remember to keep your antispyware scanners up to date and perform frequent scans with them.

In addition to your antispyware scanners, here are some free tools that will help prevent spyware from installing on your computer.

SpywareBlaster
Spyware Blaster will add known dangerous sites to your Internet Explorer restricted zone, restrict tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox and prevent dangerous ActiveX controls from installing in Internet Explorer. A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found here.

IE-SPYAD
A must if you use Internet Explorer. Adds over 5,000 potentially dangerous sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.

As these programs simply add things to your browser settings, they do not slow your computer. They are frequently updated, so please make sure that you keep these programs up-to-date.

- Use an alternative browser.

This is important for several reasons:
- most people use Internet Explorer, therefore most malware tends to target Internet Explorer.
- It has a feature known as ActiveX, which can be used to install software (including malware).

I'd recommend Firefox but Opera is also very good. It's just a personal preference really. Both are much more secure than Internet Explorer and feature many extra options, including tabbed browsing. They're both free as well, so you've got nothing to lose by trying them both and choosing the one you like the most.

Do not bother contacting us if you are not the topic starter. A valid, working link to the closed topic is required along with the user name used. If the user name does not match the one in the thread linked, the email will be deleted.
