Winfixer2006, Sysprotect, etc. - Hijackthis Log

Fighting with Winfixer2006, Sysprotect, etc. on Windows XP Pro. In safe mode right now. In "normal" mode, CPU usage is often at 100%. There is a registry key that Hijackthis shows which is related to the problem, but it can't seem to remove it. Starts w/ NI.U.

I have hispeed internet, can download whatever tools are needed.

Welcome to the forum.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from the link below:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HJT log, MrC

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin


Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and…..
Place a check against the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5_0001_N66M1101] "C:\Documents and Settings\Pat\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6T9MJALK\WinFixer2005FreeInstall[1].exe" -nag /BEFOREINSTALL

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look and let me know how it's running. MrC

Will give this a try, probably tomorrow. Previous efforts to remove NI.U…. via HiJackThis were not successful. After running Vundo, things appear to be back to "normal" - full speed, no hesitation. As a general question - no one program seems to do a perfect job at keeping this stuff out - what program or combination of programs to you like to use to try to prevent this stuff in the first place? I general use Norton in some form, Spyware Blaster, and Adaware. Being behind a router w/ firewall seems to help a lot too. Thanks. Ed

Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
or
ATF Cleaner - hit "select all" (uncheck cookies is optional - leave it checked if you want to delete all cookies) then just uncheck "cookies" then "empty selected" That will clear out all the temp files on the system.

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date
anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.
