Hello ssgordon and Welcome to TomCoyote,

It appears that you have AVG antivirus running along with Symantec antivirus. You should only have one running because they can interfere with each other. You need to uninstall one.

Please do the following:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose:Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
  • No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Smitfraud Fix

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {edbf1bc8-39ab-48eb-a0a9-c75078eb7c8e} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7CB.tmp
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2f...earch.html?p=KL
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmqx32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmqx32.dll

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if they exist:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe<==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7CB.tmp <==file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmqx32.dll<==file
Exit Explorer,

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi, Thank you for the response. I was unable to follow and steps because when I went to turn on my computer, it didn't turn on. I do not remember what it usually says, but here is what I am looking at on my screen. CD-ROM Device Driver for IDE (Four Channels Supported) (D)Dopeyright Oak Technology Inc. 1993-1996 Driver Version :V340 Device Name :BANANA Transfer Mode :Programmed I/O Drive 0: Port= 1F0 (Primary Channel), Master IRQ= 14 Firmware version :1.05 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright © Microsoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive R: = Driver BANANA unit 0 A:\> And I don't know if it matters, but my HD has two partitions, one of which I know does not have the virus on it (but it also doesn't have an operating system on it, so I can't boot onto that partition). Hopefully you know how to get me back on my computer. Thanks again for the help! ssgordon

Hello ssgordon,

Hacktool:HackTool/Samdump Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\pwdump2.zip[pwdump2.exe]
Hacktool:HackTool/Samdump Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\pwdump2.zip[samdump.dll]

I am wondering about the above. I have looked up information about the pwdump2 and samdump.dll. Are you using the psdump2 and samdump for auditing and password recovery?

http://allyourtech.c...nd_recovery.php

Password auditing and recovery is often described with a very unfortunate catchall: cracking. The problem with calling it that is that it does not come close to correctly encapsulating an absolutely necessary and invaluable practice for network administrators.

Please tell me if you are familiar with this. If you are not, then someone else must be trying to check out the passwords.

Yes, I got psdump2 from a friend. Whatever is on my computer changed my password, so I couldn't log in. He sent me the program to help me recover my password. I never used it becuase i just logged in as root and removed the passwords. I don't recognize the other one. If it is part of psdump2, then it should be there, if it is something else, then I dont know where it came from. And by the way, I ran another sweep and the trojan horse was still detected. I dont know if I shouldn't have done that, but i was curious. Thanks again for the help. ssgordon

Hello Gordon,

Let's do this. Also if you run SpySweeper again and a Trojan is detected, please copy and paste the information from the log for me to see.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2f...earch.html?p=KL
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmqx32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmqx32.dll

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
STEP 1.
======
Delete Files with Killbox

Download Pocket Killbox from http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. DO NOT RUN IT YET.
==========
Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program. It is the ]red circle with a large white X in it
- Highlight the files in bold RED below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0L6FS1EB\support[1].htm
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0L6FS1EB\winz32[1].exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\PEDVZKF4\CA8RQ5SB.HTM
C:\Documents and Settings\Shane Gordon\Desktop\comp fix\backups\backup-20060421-095433-390.dll
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPNd2fn.dll
C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\N2PLUGIN.DLL
C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\NPND2FN.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys

In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
in the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
(Please note that the tool checks your computer for the presence of the files pasted into the box so if files are not present, it is possible that you might not see all files you pasted into the box.)
Click the option to Delete on Reboot
- If not greyed out click the checkbox for Unregister .dll Before Deleting
- click End Explorer Shell while Killing File
- Now click on the red button with a white 'X' in the middle to delete the files
- Click Yes when it says all files will be deleted on the next reboot
- Click Yes when it asks if you want to reboot now
(Note: If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually)

Note: Killbox will let you know if a file does not exist. If that happens, just continue on.

If you have any issues with this method you can copy and paste the lines one at a time into the killbox top box. Then click the "Single File" button. Then click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes. A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No until the last one at which time you click yes to allow the reboot.
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky WebScanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Please post back the results from Kapersky, and a fresh HijackThis log.

Hello ssgordon,

Let's work on deleting the infected files.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You have infected items in Quarantine which pose no threat there.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files Now we will delete the files within the Temporary Internet Files folder but not the Temporary Internet Files folder itself.
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Note: If you cannot seem to navigate to the Temp folder above , use the Search feature and search on C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\*.*

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Go ahead and repeat the Kapersky scan to check to see if the infected temporary internet files are gone.

Hello ssgordon,

Your hijackthis log appears to be clean and you got rid of the infected files, or infected files are in quarantine.

It appears that you have AVG antivirus running along with Symantec antivirus. You should only have one running because they can interfere with each other. You need to uninstall one. Then do the following to help stay malware free.

STEP 1.
======
Prefetch Folder
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\
Delete All files in this folder but not the Prefetch folder

STEP 2.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malware...39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
    Test Firewall

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
    and here: http://wiki.castleco...nt_Re-infection
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan
