Hi,

My system has been crashing lately, I've tried several things and still am unsure whether I've solved the problem. Here is my log, please let me know if further information is needed. I'm particularly curious about things I've read about /systemroot/system32/smss.exe.

Hello karendanette , Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Modem Spy

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

[size=2]Hello LDTate, and thanks for your help.

I had problems last summer and posted a HJT log but never got a response, so I thought I would have to wing it this time too. Last year I ended up reformatting, and lastnight I used Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in hopes of saving more of my files this time. As I'm sure you will be able to tell, I've tried lots of things attempting to find what I thought was a rootkit. I found detailed instructions for what to do before posting an HJT log on Majorgeeks' forum, which is why I tried so many different things. A couple of things were picked up in safe mode by Spysweeper, and I manually removed them. I was still having problems with my computer almost constantly shutting down, so from another computer, I did a Google search for "Your system has recovered from a serious error..." and ended up doing the workaround that Microsoft suggested regarding page file size. Everything was much better but still not quite right. Since then, my computer has only crashed maybe five times, but after logging on, I have to wait several minutes before I am able to do anything, and even longer after I've connected to the Internet.

I do apologize if the things I have done will make it more difficult to sort out, I just thought that maybe for whatever reason, my posts were being disregarded. Here's my new HJT log.

By the way, I purchased Modemspy as I have been trying to get a divorce for two years now. I removed it, but was it really harmful?

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

I had run Blacklight lastnight from a CD and it didn't find anything. I just moved it to my desktop and ran it again, and still nothing. Here are the logs...

I don't see much left that needs fixed. I don't see anything that would be causing the PC to shutdown or reboot by itself.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Hi,

When I followed your last instructions, the [kernel fault check] was already gone, and I removed the R1 item like you said, but it came back again. I booted into safe mode, and now it appears to be gone. My computer seems to only shut down now if I'm running too many programs (2 scans at the same time, 2 downloads, appears to be enough) Also I'm having to wait longer than ever after booting up and connecting to the Internet before I can do anything at all except watch, shake my head, and wait. I have a feeling it's something so blatantly obvious (possibly hardware, memory, drivers) I'm just not getting it, but even as much as I know, it's trivial when it comes to computers. Any thoughts at all?

Also, I don't know if it makes any difference, but I am unable to install updates from Microsoft. It appears that I do have the latest updates (a message appeared telling me to shut down rather than restart to install the updates). When I send an error report, the message is always that a driver installed on my system caused the error. Some very strange things were happening the first day I posted the log, my computer suddenly was running faster than it ever had, I was on Major Geeks website and in the right top corner of the page was part of Bellsouth's logo, as if the pages had been merged, and I was instructed to change my password with Bellsouth.net. I mean it was running lightning fast, and I'm on dial-up. I shut down and that's when I began my search on Google from another computer. After I did the workaround from Microsoft regarding page file size, the next day it was running better, and it then appeared that the Bellsouth password reset was legitimate. I did finally succeed in changing my password, and my computer stays up much longer now before crashing. Once I finally am able to browse the Internet, check email, it appears to be quite a bit faster. It just seems like there should be something I could do to speed up the boot process. Just in case it matters...

Have you checked for updates for your video card?

Unless you purcahsed Spy Sweeper: Use Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.

Hi, There was an update for my video card and I downloaded and installed it. I uninstalled Spysweeper. I downloaded RegSeeker, backed up the registry, and followed your instructions. 41 items remained and would not go away even in safemode. I clicked to export those remaining entries, received a message "export complete" (or something like that) but I don't know where it went. After updating the video card, and cleaning the registry (by the way, everything appears to be working fine) I was still having to wait a while after boot and connecting to the internet. VTPreset was automatically checked after the update, so I unchecked it and have rebooted a few times since then. I wonder if Windows Defender is slowing it down too, and do you recommend that program, or would something else be a better choice? Thanks again for all your help!

Windows Defender

Any programs like this and Anti-Virus programs will use resources.
As far as I know Windows Defender is still in Beta:

None of these are bad but might help speed it up.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Empty Recycle bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

If you're using a router and/or external modem, power both off, unplug the power and wait about 5 mins. Plug the power back in, turn them on and see if that helps.

I'm not using a router, and my modem is internal.
