F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\System32\merqk.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=Explorer.exe, ,xyytvuc.exe

From searching around, I know the two items I have bolded in the above two lines from my hijackthis log are viruses, I believe download.trojan virus, but I cannot find the executable file (or its source) to get rid of them. The only virus notification I recieve anymore at startup (from Norton Antivirus) is that it has found and quarantined (failed clean) xyytvuc.exe.tmp in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 file.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is a new one let's try this
* Download Brute Force Uninstaller to your C:\
* Unzip it to a folder of its own (C:\BFU). So BFU should be on your root. In most cases this is C:\
* Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as)
* Place qoofix.bat in your C:\BFU - folder. (Important!)
* Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
* Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
* Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
* After the PC has restarted please post another hijackthis log.

When prompted add C:\WINDOWS\System32\merqk.exe

Hope this helps

I have BFU already installed, and have run the alcanshorty.bfu file.... There is no link to the qoofix.bat file you posted. :( I'll see if I can find it and run it. Your help is appreciated. :)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = PERSONAL.COM
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = PERSONAL.COM
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = PERSONAL.COM
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = PERSONAL.COM

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite and post the results here.
With a new hijackthis log.

Quick question, will checking all the "O17" listed above delete the files. The infected computer is on a network (I replaced the company name with "PERSONAL" just be sure I did not violate any privacy policies, and I unplugged the network cable as soon as I discovered the initial problem; it is still disconnected from the network). Just wondering if these are legitimate network files or not.

I have ewido installed and have run it several times in both safe mode and normal mode. The last scan came up with nothing. :) I will run it again just to check. Thank you again. :)

I am still unable to copy anything to disk (and visa-versa) in normal logon. I can only copy these files to disk in safemode. I get a MS error report when I try to copy files to a disk, and it references the searchunhook file I believe we deleted above. Any ideas here?

Finally, I have a folder under C:\ called "bintheredunthat" with one file in it: sk02.exe. Yesterday I went through the process on this site to eliminate surfsidekick, is this another ssk file?

Thank you for all your help and putting up with all my questions. :)

The folder and file are gone. Computer is still acting oddly, internet explorer freezes. So far only when I am on the windows update site attempting to upgrade to XP SP2.

Spysweeper caught several more programs attemting to load, mostly 'browser helpers', and the program trojan hunter caught a program called adware.downloader.

Repeated sweeps with ewido, adaware, and spysweerer are not turning anything up. And as I finally have this computer back online, all definitions are current as of today.

Imy latest hijack log file seems to have suspicious entries, namly those with "dmltsp.exe", "wtbmlp.exe", and "wuauclt.exe". I have no idea what they are.

Latest log:

Please set your system to show
all files and Reboot into Safe Mode

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [simfm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wtbmlp.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Wsnn] "C:\PROGRA~1\SSTEM3~1\wuauclt.exe" -vt yazr
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dmltsp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmltsp.exe

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

xyytvuc.exe << may be in system32 folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wtbmlp.exe reg_run
C:\PROGRA~1\SSTEM3~1\wuauclt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmltsp.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

The referenced three lines in Hijackthis do not appear when run in safe mode....should i try it under normal logon? Also, I have all hidden files shown, and all protected system files shown, and I do not see a folder named C:\PROGRA~1 oiy.... I did get windows update to finally work. Final question, the wuauclt.exe file in the C:\Windows\system32 file (different directory than is listed above, I know) is listed as a windows auto-update file?

Yes try a normal login.

C:\PROGRA~1\SSTEM3~1
Sorry that would be C:\Program Files1\sstem...1\ <<when you find the full file path you can pate it in killbox.

Final question, the wuauclt.exe file in the C:\Windows\system32 file (different directory than is listed above, I know) is listed as a windows auto-update file?

yes that would not be the one When you find the other file right click and check the properties and see who wrote it not MS for sure.
