Hello-
Well, I have had a lot of problems with my laptop in the last few weeks. I had a the "about:blank" deal, and I thought I got rid of it but I have these other symptoms now–I have more pop ups than ever before (and I do have a pop-up blocker that has always done it's job and still continues to block), I keep having a McAfee alert pop up telling me it has found a PUP-some of them it will let me delete, others it says are write protected and it won't let me delete, clean, or quarantene, multiple torjans are constantly being found and deleted by McAfee, and there is this bizarre audio file that plays occasionally in the background. This audio file is in two clips-one about an alien landing and the other is a conversation between a man and a woman. This plays when there is nothing else running-no internet explorer, no windows media, no other media software, everything is off but this audio file plays from somewhere. Anyway, this is the HJT log:

I really appreciate your help, I have tried everything-as you can probably tell from my log I have installed and ran more spyware, malware, spamkiller software than I know what to do with…thanks again!! Oh, and I am running XP, have the most up-to-date virus and spyware software (McAfee). And I have run the scans in Safe Mode as well.
Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Please follow the directions. Before we start you are running HJT from a Temp folder and we will have no backups for safety. I prefer: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Thanks to Metallica and any others who helped with this fix.

1. Please download Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Install ewido anti-malware
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • In the scriptline to execute field type or paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log. We will have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

::Report End

Now, right after I did the scan in Safe Mode, I was restarting to run the HJT scan and it went to a blue screen and it said that Windows had been shut down due to some error. This hasn't happened before. It said something about deleting physical memory and to reboot and if it happened againt to contact a specialist or something. I don't know. I still have a lot of pop-ups and a lot of warnings about PUPs found and trojans cleaned. Again, thank you so much for helping me. And do you by any chance know what this audio thing is that runs occasionally (I described it before)?

Thanks again..I hope to hear from you soon…
It looks like the fix with the BFU failed :( are you sure you followed the directions carefully?
It does a much better job than the manual fix. Perhaps we will run it again when we are done to make sure everything in gone. I will try to answer any questions you have once we remove the malware that is probably causing it. Read through the fix a couple of times so you know what is coming up. It may help to print it. Follow the directions carefully.

1) If you can not see the bad files you can delete them, follow these instructions:
SHOW HIDDEN FILES: MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS
Double click my computers & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\windows\mousepad9.exe >>> file

C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\Monali\LOCALS~1\Temp\1F.tmp >>> not the folder
C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\Monali\LOCALS~1\Temp\1B.tmp3584.exe"

The bad stuff is in the TEMP folder I have highlited in red. I want you to open that folder and delete everything in it.
This information may help: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer. Post a new HJT log along with your comments.

Thanks…Phil
I can't find these files: C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\Monali\LOCALS~1\Temp\1F.tmp >>> not the folder C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\Monali\LOCALS~1\Temp\1B.tmp3584.exe" What do I do?
To be sure, make sure you are showing all hidden files and folder, but I don't believe these are hidden.

(if you are set on Double Click)
Double click on MyComputer > Double Click on C:\ > Double Click on Documents and Settings > Double Click on Monali > Double Click on Local Settings > You have a Temp folder and a Temporary Internet Files folder there, open them and delete the contents. NOT THE FOLDERS

then do this:

ATF Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

To be sure they are all gone
I requested:

Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the computer. Post a new HJT log along with your comments
