I thought I got it out by following the instructions but it is back. While it doesn't say "Blackworm" anymore, it has come up with a new "infection". I have run VundoFix and ewido while in safe mode. Here is my HijackThis log after running. What do I need to do next?

I run Norton AV and Internet Security on this computer and I keep it up to date.

As an aside, my stepdaughter logs on to Myspace.com, Facebook.com, and using AIM a lot. Are any of these the vector infecting the computer?

Thanks

John

Hello John and welcome to TomCoyote forum. I do have some opinions, like I believe much of the infection we are dealing with today is because gullible users stilll believe they can click on "free" and expect that something free will really be there. You have two nasty infections, Look2me and Vundo and they are both simply adware infections dedicated to placing adware in one form or another in front of you, the user. What is bad is that no consideration is given to rather porn adds may be viewed by children. Keep in mind these lowlifes are being paid well and often by "respected" businesses. Let's try to clean you up and then I'll answer questions with my limited knowledge if you still have them. I am giving you quite a bit to do, take your time and proceed carefully. Please do this in the posted order.

1) You are running from G:\ and HJT must run from a drive. If G:\ is not a drive, move HJT to C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe.

2) This program: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe I suggest you may want to remove it in Add Remove programs after you view the links:
http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
http://www.greatis.c...viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywarein...4.php#viewpoint

I believe we should remove Look2me first, with both fixes it is very important that the directions are followed if you wish to be successful.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

3) Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log. (Hold the logs until the end)
If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive...ib/MSWINSCK.OCX

More info:

If for some reason Look2Me-Destroyer doesn't reopen check that task scheduler is running.
If it isnt you can use sc.exe to start it

start>run sc start schedule press enter.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

4) Please download VundoFix v4.2.35 to the Desktop:
http://www.atribune....tent/view/24/2/
* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task
* You will receive a message saying VundoFix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens, click: Scan for Vundo
* Once it's done scanning, click: Remove Vundo
* A prompt asking if you want to remove the files appears, click: Yes
* Once you click yes, the Desktop goes blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, a prompt to shutdown the computer appears, click OK
* Turn the computer back on.

**some lines may be gone when you get to them, do not be concerned, just do not miss any**
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: RawExecAction Object - {18898424-E3AB-4BA9-8E8D-5434B1CECA75} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\opnlk.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mzkex] C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?wexec.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: App Paths - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dn6m01j1e.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: opnlk - C:\WINDOWS\System32\opnlk.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?wexec.exe <<< and delete that file highlited in red. This is PurityScan adware, the ? will be another letter or number, it should not be difficult to find and delete.

Restart the computer and post the contents of Look2Me-Destroyer.txt, C:\vundofix.txt and a new HJT log along with your comments. We will have more to do.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for the help in knowing where to start and what to do. I really appreciate it. Yesterday, I ran AdAware SE (after updating it) and found that the computer is also infected with Virtumonde. AdAware would also freeze up while trying to delete it. I tried it a number of times and it happens each and every thime. I am out of town tonight but will get started tomorrow on cleaning out the spyware/adware/malware using your suggestions on how to do it. Again thanks and I'll post the updates tomorrows. -John

No problem John, take the time you need to do it safely. I might suggest, because these infections have a way of attracting others, that you keep this computer offline as much as possible until it is clean. Thanks...Phil :wavey:

Hello John, Looks like you were successful with both the fix for L2m and Vundo. I do not know here you picked up that carp**, but suggest you avoid that site Not much left, but let's do some cleaning. First, I am proceeding with the understanding that G:\ is a drive, and if we need the backups we will be able to retrive them. Second, you need to give me feedback, from here I can't tell how the computer is running.

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Please view these links:
http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
http://www.greatis.c...viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywarein...4.php#viewpoint
I suggest you uninstall that junk in Add Remove programs.

2) I see ewido onboard, open the program and choose update, allow time for it to finish. Now click scanner then complete system scan. Allow ewido to remove anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Save that scan report, I must see it.

3) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan results, a new HJT log and your comments.

Thanks...Phil

Comments first. The computer is much faster, email downloads quicker, browser windows pop open, and apps like MS Word don't drag out their opening. In other words, I'm ecstatic! Thanks to you and to all who volunteer their time and expertise to help the rest of us with our computers.

Now the ewido and hijack logs.

Sounds good John, let me look at the logs and then I'll have some information that may make your performance even better.

First ewido, ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
All cookies and everything it located removed, here is some information to help control those cookies if you wish:

Your HJT log looks clean of malware, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Here are some ideas that may help you run better:
