pede125, :D

Welcome to the Tom Coyote Forum, you have gotten quite a mess going on here, sites like partypoker are a hotbed of bringing along bad stuff with it.

You have a Vundo Trojan Infection along with a possible Rootkit infection that may be leaving your system open to hackers to do with what they want.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Hold of on replying for a moment....

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware
Ewido Anti-Malware
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program <-- Dont run it yet

Now reboot into Safemode
To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now open Ewido
o Click on scanner.
o Run a full system scan
o Let the program scan the machine.
o While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
o Select Perform action on all infections
o Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
o Click Save report.
o Save the report to your desktop.

While in Safemode
Go you your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove PartyPoker.

Still in Safemode, open HJT Scan Only , the only window you should have open is HJT, put a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW

* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

Now look for and delete the files in Red if present, they may be gone already.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lockbar.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sfg_558a.dll

Reboot normally

This is what I need you to post

* The log from the Vundo Fix
* The Ewido Report
* A new HJT log
* And let me know if your system has improved

Peter,

Vundo is gone but we still have another issue that may give us trouble.

Download Pocket Killbox

I need you to paste the entire path of each file separetly into FULL PATH OF FILE TO DELETE. Confirm the deletetion but when it asks you to reboot , say no, after the third file is entered, then say yes.

C:\windows\system32\lockbar.exe.
C:\windows\system32\msdirectx.sys
C:\windows\system32\DSC00235[1].com

* Open Pocket Killbox
* Copy and paste this entire path into Full Path of File to Delete
* Set it to Delete on Reboot
* Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
* Click on the Red circle with the white X
* It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
* It will ask you to reboot, say yes

Boot into Safemode and remove both these entries with HJT

Post a new HJT log please.

Good Morning pede125 :D

I would like you to read this and to see what we are up against. What it is saying is that with this terrible rootkit that your system may never be secure to do things like online banking and all of your personal things like purchasing products online using your credit card .

A new policy at Tom Coyote is due to the dangerous nature of rootkits, RATs (remote access trojans) and ID Theft. These specific types of spyware bury themselves in the base coding of Windows, which allow them to load into the system before the Windows API loads. This means that they are hidden from Windows because windows will load after they are installed preventing them appearing in any of windows directories.

The first rootkit that we heard about was Hacker Defender. It is still around but there are tools that will remove it now. However, Hacker Defender can hide newer rootkits and RATs (which are more dangerous) because the newer ones load first, followed by Hacker Defender and then windows. Several rootkits have been identified, but most do not respond to any current removal methods. Rootkits hide other malicious code like RATs and the ID Theft files. This is why Rootkits are so dangerous. Some of them only hide Spyware, though this is bad for the user, it is not as bad as if there are files hidden that will send all of their passwords, and information back to the Rootkit author's server. If there is a RAT (remote access trojan or backdoor trojan) all the victim's private information can flow out to the internet without leaving any trace. This is what the ID theft hijacker that appeared earlier this year is based on.

Once a victim has had one of the above, they can no longer trust the PC to be secure. The reason for that is that though we may remove some of the hidden files, we never know if we have removed ALL of the hidden files. Therefore we cannot pronounce a PC, clean, because we don't know what other hidden bad files are left. They will never be able to use that computer for secure operations

Lets try this to see if we can locate the files that are part of this Rootkit.

* Download and run Blacklight
* F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure....light/try.shtml
* Click the I accept button near the bottom of that page.
* Click > scan then > next, next again then exit
* There will be a new txt file near blacklite. post it please.

* Important: If any files show Do not rename them.....legitimate files can be listed.

Post the log into this thread,

Ken :D

I have noticed that "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [freexstyle] DSC00235[1].com" does not seem to want to go away. I keep removing it in HJT but it remains in the new logs.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Pete

Hello Pete, Please bare with me, this entry is very difficult to remove and is a real malicious file and has to go. I am looking into it further with the help of my teachers and will be back to you as soon as I can. Ken :D

Pete,

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here
Scroll to the bottom of the page and install the 4.5 trial and not the free online scan.
Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address,
it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Close out Spysweeper <-- Dont run it yet

Now run the scan in Safemode and be sure to post back with the log.

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C.
Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer, and then please copy and paste the SpySweeper log into this thread.

Ken :D

Kaspersky found a virus, but didn't indicate how to get rid of it.

I attempted to locate anything related to "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [freexstyle] DSC00235[1].com" but Windows Explorer does not yield any search results.

Please advise.

Peter,

What Kapersky found was in your system restore program, you can flush it out like this.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point You will have to be in Catagory View to see this.
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

We are still looking for a fix for the freexstyle entry, hopefully will be back later today.

pede125, :D

We need to back up the registry before we make any changes to it in case we need to restore it.

* Click Start, and then click Run.
* In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
* Locate and then click the subkey that contains the value that you want to edit.
* On the File menu, click Export.
* In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file,
* Type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.

Export these three keys for back up

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServices

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Tutorial for Restoring the Registry

Lets also make a new Restore point with System Restore

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember You will have to be in Catagory View to do this.

If there should be a problem , you can restart your computer by clicking on the F8 key, then scroll up to "LAST KNOWN GOOD" hit enter.

Ok here we go

We need to find a service and stop it and then remove that bad entry in the windows registry.

* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to msdirectx
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

Click Start > Run.
Type regedit
Click OK.

Navigate to each subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServices

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, delete the value "freexstyle" = "lockbar.exe"

Exit the Registry Editor.

Post a new HJT log please.

Ken,

I could not find the msdirectx service in the services.msc feature. As such, I was not able to find or delete the "freexstyle" or "lockbar.exe" values.

However, using MSCONFIG in the STARTUP tab, I was able to uncheck an entry that contained the DSC00235 name.

The following is another HJT log.

Good Morning Peter,

Your log looks good :thumbup: Good job getting rid of that bad entry.

Just want you to remember that what you had was a Rootkit and there really isn't any way to quarantee a 100% that your system is fully clean. Even though everything looks ok, there still is a slight chance that your system may be compromised, security wise. I am not telling you to do this but sometimes the only way to regain full security is to do a format and a full clean install of windows. This however is your call. I am just telling you what your up against.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <-- But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.
