I'm working on a friend's computer that was filled with spyware, got lots of popups, etc. I did about three rounds of the SpyBot, AdAware, and Ewido cleanings per your instructions which seemed to clear up a lot of junk. The final piece seems to be the entry in the registry: HKLM\SOFTWARE\YOURSITEBAR and …\YOURSITEBAR\HISTORYSTRING. I imagine a lot of his problems will have been solved, but with this hanging around, I can imagine it will only be a short time before he's filled with spyware all over again (of course his surfing habits contribute to the problem in no small part). Anyway, here's the Ewido and HijackThis logs:

P.S. - Once this has been resolved, can you suggest any real-time monitor utils that will help keep some of the spyware from loading on his machine?
Hello kjfrey55, Welcome to the TC forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Click "Save" and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi, Actually, I stumbled across the solution just last night. When I happened to look at th permissions on the HKLM\SOFTWARE\YourSiteBar folder in Regedit (XP lets you see permissions - Win2k you have to use regedt32) the Special Permissions were checked and not "Full Control" or "Read". When I unchecked the Special Permissions, and checked "Full Control" I was able to delete the entry. After several reboots it has not returned. Go figure! I'm not sure if there is a place to indicate that this problem is solved, but I believe that it is. Thanks!
You can do as you like, but YourSiteBar was only part of the problem.
I suggest you run the fix I posted it you want the PC cleaned.
No offense intended. It was a friends machine that he has now taken back. I will go over your solution and implement your suggestions when I see him next. Thank you.
