Very computer illiterate here. So please go easy on me.
This is my sister's computer, she had a virus and lost everything when she deleted it, she has since reinstalled windows 98 and some other stuff. But it's running VERY slow. Please help!

Here's the log… what do I do? Norton was on here I believe, but we'd like to use Trend Micro instead, we DLed the trial.

Hi Leashy :D ,

Sorry for the delay but we are overwhelmed with logs. You have a worm on your computer that we need to get rid of. Unfortunatly, most of the programs to remove this stuff wont work on Win 98. After we get rid of the worm, it would be in your best interest security wise to upgrade to Win XP.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html <- Instructions here

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Open HJT Scan Only, close all open windows ..the only window you should have open is HJT…. put a checkmark in this entry and click on Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {daa873d4-958c-453c-81ca-3fe6f3676a87} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EXAA.DLL (file missing)

Now look for and delete this file in Red
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EXAA.DLL

Reboot normally

This is what you have, you can read about it here. You have Trendmicro installed, check for updates and run a full scan.
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc…=TROJ_SMALL.AMI

Download and Install CCleaner

* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

Tutorial for CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp

Post back with a new HJT log please.

Ken :D
Hi Ken,

I did not see the "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {daa873d4-958c-453c-81ca-3fe6f3676a87} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EXAA.DLL (file missing)" to fix. I downloaded CCleaner while I was waiting for a response and ran that, so maybe that got rid of it? I also couldn't find the file you said to delete. Is there anything else I can do to make sure it's gone? Computer is still acting wonky. Yesterday something kept popping up saying mmsystem.dll was not functioning? Has not happened today though.

Thanks so much for your help, here's a new log.

Hi Again,

Thanks for the new log, it looks ok , :thumbup: I dont see any evidence of a virus or any malware.

Do a search for this file, mmsystem.dll it should be in C:\windows\system and if its missing, you can download it here. You will have to unzip to C:windows\system
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mmsystem

If this doesnt help, then you can post in these forums for free windows help.

These are tips and free programs to install to help keep you more secure.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
