Hello Cak, Sorry for the wait but we are extremely busy :( I will say that all I see in this log that is wrong is a HJT running from a TEMP folder when we need a permanent folder. If you still need help, please return to C:\Windows\ and right click a blank spot then make a new folder called HJT. Move the HijackThis.exe from that Temp folder to the new HJT folder.

My computer is an old Dell and it has Windows 98SE. It's been acting kinda crazy and I was wondering if you could scrutinize my logfile please.

Please try to describe your problems in as much detail as possible, include any error messages you are receiving word for word. Post a new HJT log running from the permanent folder.

Thanks…pskelley

Dear pskelly, :wavey:

This computer has been terribly slow and awkward more than I think it should be . sometimes it works well but others it can't seem to get out of it's own way. I frequently have to restart to get the desired effect.
I have been getting this error message: "Syncronization complete, error occured while windows was syncronizing your data."
I am taking care of this computer for my folks and try to monitor this post from home. I am currently using their computer to write this post and send a hijack this log. Here is the latest logfile as you directed:

I appreciate your help!
Hi, I still have a Compaq with Windows98SE in it and I know how cranky they can get. I am not sure I can help with this, the error message is one I have not heard before so I doubt it is related to malware. We can run a few scan if you like, but my first question is the error message. It is rare that google does not return some information when an error message in entered. I wondered if you would mind taking another look at that error message making sure you have it just as displayed and you have included all of the error message, any other information that may be there. Thanks.
"Syncronization complete, error occured while windows was syncronizing your data." This may well have to do with the Synchronization Manager that you will read about later in this thread?

Now, let's check the integrity of the system files, use the information in this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwi…ysfilecheck.asp

What about maintenance?

(this could be the origin of the error message? Uncheck it and see if it goes away)

If no one has been in the case before or for a long time, I suggest you pick up a can of air at the office supply store.
http://www.ehow.com/how_3664_clean-computers-insides.html

If you want to run some scans to look for stuff that may be hiding:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Run at least one of these free online scans.

Let me know if any of this helps, post that message and I'll search Google some more if more information about the message is available.

Thanks…Phil
Hello Phil,

I believe I've done all you recommended. There was a corrupted Windows system file that we extracted from the Windows 98 SE disc. There was immediate speed increase after fixing the system files. B) I have upgraded to the latest Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware SE and scanned with both. I have a question about suggestion that mentions Ewido scan results, (What is Ewido?) Here is a new hjt scan. Thank you for your help.

Hello and please accept my apology :( By far the largest number of systems I work on are Windows XP. To keep from typing the same thing over and over of course we use canned messages. Ewido Security Suite if one of the best tools we have because they allow folks a two week trial then if they do not buy they still can keep the scan and update it. The one drawback is it only works for Window 2000 and Windows XP. I simply forgot to edit out "Ewido Scan results" from my canned. Here is a look at it: http://www.ewido.net/en/ but it will not work for Windows 98.

Now to your post. Sometime I think I should scan the windows files at the beginning of all repair? I am glad to hear that worked for you. I am also glad to hear you are running better  Your HJT log appears clean of malware. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
