I was referred to your forum by the tech support people at Sunbelt Software makers of CounterSpy. Their CounterSpy keeps finding the following spyware:

"trojan.procounter.rootkit"

No matter what action I take to remove/quarantine this item, it is always found on the next spyware scan (even though CounterSpy reports that it was successful in doing the action). I contacted CounterSpy tech support and got these responses:

—————————-
"We have been running into some new versions of spyware that CounterSpy
currently can not remove. We are working on a new version of CounterSpy
that can remove these threats, but that is still a couple of months
away."

…

"Another thing you can try is another program called hijackthis, which
will definitely take out the problem, but it is a tool, and you need to
know what you are doing."

"Information about it can be found here, and you can post your scan log
to the forum and people will help you clean your system."

"The best thing that you can do is go to http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ and
run the HijackThis program. This will create logs for you. You can then
go to their forum:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php
&showforum=27 and post your logs. They can give you step by step
removal."
—————————-

I ran HJT on the system and it produced the following log:

Do I indeed have the "trojan.procounter.rootkit" on my system or is CounterSpy producing a false positive? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks…
Ron Scott
Click start > control panel > user accounts > change the way users log on or off > uncheck fast user switching > restart you computor.

Download, unzip and run 'RootkitRevealer' from Sysinternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html
Once the program has started, press Scan and let it run.
When the scan is done, use 'File > Save' to place the logfile in a convenient location (such as the desktop). The default filename will be 'RootkitReveal.txt'.

Save your Log File
Copy/Paste the contecnts of that logfile into your next reply

NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

That way you should have a much simpler and clearer log file in which to peruse and evaluate.
Thanks for your quick response. I ran the RootkitRevealer software as you indicated and it reported "Scan complete: no discrepancies found". This is the same result as I got several weeks ago when I ran it just after Sunbelt's CounterSpy reported the item.
Download and save blacklight to your desktop.
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply. http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Download AproposFix by Swandog46
Save it to your desktop or to another folder of its own, but do NOT run it yet!

Now reboot your computer in Safe Mode! (You must be in safe mode or this fix will not work.)

Once in Safe Mode, double-click aproposfix.exe which will give you a chice of where to unzip/install the program to). This is called the Destination folder in the window that popsup. So either install it to the Desktop or the folder where you downloaded the aproposfix.exe file to. It will create a new folder named aproposfix. Open the aproposfix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to run the fix. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file that has been created in the aproposfix folder.
Downloaded AproposFix, booted to Safe Mode and ran it. Here is the log:

Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for the help. I will try your suggestion. I always thought it might be a false positive. The troublesome thing is that CounterSpy finds and identifies "trojan.procounter.rootkit" but is unable to remove or quarantine it. Why would they be able to identify a threat but not know how to deal with it? Furthermore, if I Google "procounter rootkit" I get only 26 hits and the only ones that are relevant point to www.sunbelt-software.com. I find it odd that no other security site mentions (or appears to be aware of) this item. Again, thanks for your help… Ron Scott
