BarrKilla :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote, we have been overwhelmed with logs or we would have gotten to you sooner.

Please keep in mind that we get 1000s of logs aday to look at and we are just a small band of volunteers, so keep in mind that patience is a virtue.

You have a few things going on that need to be fixed, but before we do, I need you to move HJT to its own folder, we cant proceed until its moved.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Please post a new HJT log as your system may have changed since your last post.

Your still running HJT out of a temp folder. It needs to be moved and the folder in the temp files removed.

Barr,

Good job moving it, its right where we want it to be :thumbup: I'm sorry if I have been a stickler on this but we are going to make changes to your system and I cant tell you how important backups are.

You have a few trojans on you system that we need to remove , you may want to print this out as we will have to disconnect from the internet for part of the fix.

* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to NTBOOTMGR
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
* Type in NTBOOT
* Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido Anti-Malware
Ewido Anti-Malware
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program <-- Dont run it yet

Enable Windows to Show All Files and Folders

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

o Now open up Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
* Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
* Close Ewido Security Suite.

While still in Safemode, Open HJT Scan Only, close all open windows ( The only window you should have open is HJT ) put a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O23 - Service: NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe

Now look for and delete this file in Red
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe <-- Dont be alarmed if you cant find it, the scans may have removed it.

Reboot normally.

Download and Install CCleaner

* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

Tutorial for CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp

Post back with the report from Ewido and a new HJT log .

BarrKilla,

Good job removing that bad service :thumbup: , it was a virus and it is now history.

The rest of your log looks ok, :D just a couple of things to ask you.

If you look in your HJT log, you will see 4 entries in the 015 line for your Trusted Zone in Internet Explorer. If they are ok with you thats fine, if not we can fix them.

Are you happy with the hp toolkit explorer tool bar, if not we can fix it.

your Ewido log came up clean also, just found a few cookies.

How is everything running now? If you feel all is well, let me know and I have some tips and free tools for you to install that will help keep you more secure on the internet.

Ken :D

I'm not really even sure what the hp toolkit bar really is. I never paid attention to it. If my system and internet is fine without it then I wouldn't mind losing it. Also, what is this broadjump found on the 015 line. Could it have to do with my dsl maybe. or some of my programs I have running/ Thanks for all your help in getting my system clean. I greatly appreciate it. Oh and your tips are welcome. Feel free to tip away. :D

BarrKilla,

The HP Tool Kit might of installed when you installed your printer. It is not a bad entry so I would leave it alone at the moment. If you want, you can go to the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel and uninstall it. Dont uninstall your printer, just look for an entry for the HP Toolkit. On the other hand, try using it, it may have some features that you like, if not than remove it. If you do, then remove this line with HJT

O3 - Toolbar: hp toolkit - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - C:\HP\EXPLOREBAR\HPTOOLKT.DLL

As far as the 015 entries for your Trusted Zones, I suspect that they are all including the one for broadjump related to Bellsouth so they are safe.

I am not looking at any Anti-Virus software on your system :( I am including 2 free programs in my list of tools, unless you already have plans to buy another program, install JUST one of the free ones, with AV Software MORE IS NOT BETTER.

You need to install a firewall also. Zone Alarm is free and excellent.

FYI > Ewido is a 30 day trial, but it will still function after 30 days, you can check for updates and run the scan to remove things, you just lose the background guard.

I am going to give you a list of things to run and do and some tools to install. Be sure to follow the instructions for System Restore. That virus you removed is backed up in System Restore and if you should ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date for some reason, you will be reinfected all over again. :rant2:

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Barr, I am glad that your system is running ok and that I could help you. I will keep this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote.
