Hi,

I've run Spy-Bot, Ad Aware, SpyWare Blaster and X Cleaner and despite my best efforts, can't get rid of these pop-ups (tho the situation has improved)

Thanks for the help in advance!

1.
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

2.
Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

3.
Download and install AdAware
AdAware Tutorial
Don't run it yet!

4.
Reboot your pc into safe mode

Print this advice and/or save it as a text file with Notepad to your desktop for in safe mode there is no internet connection

Safe mode for Windows XP
*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded and just before Windows starts to load begin tapping the F8 (or F5) key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

5.
Open HijackThis > click "Do a system scan only"
Place a checkmark next to the entries below.
After you have done that close all browsers and windows except HijackThis, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Shell] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WebCheck - C:\WINDOWS\system32\fp0803due.dll

Close HijackThis.

6.
You can use Windows Explorer to find and delete this files:
(Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fp0803due.dll

7.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

8.
1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

9.
Run Ewido:
- Click on scanner
- Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

10.
Reboot into normal mode

11.
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

12.
Download Panda activescan

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents this Panda-reportlog together with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Edited to safe these instructions before boot into safe mode....

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe

Okay, since this is a really nasty trojan that also is a root kit I will suggest strongly not to use this computer to do any online banking or use credit cards. Please change your passwords and be careful.
Perhaps you even should consider a reformat (I will ask the experts).
For the mean time, since you appear to have the Look2Me infection also, I suggest you run this tool:

If for any reason you already have the l2mfix; delete the entire folder and re-download and install as it is constantly updated.
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Please look at a way to avoid trash on your PC!

I named the nasty trojan a rootkit, but actually it is a keylogger. It steals passwords, register your keystrokes and possible and is a real treath during online banking or using creditcards because its stealingcredit card or bank account numbers.
Therefore I advice you to read this articles:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

As for the Look2Me infection I advice you to complete the fix by running option #2#:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so! Do Not run in safe mode!!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

Is there a way to remove the really nasty trojan? It's my personal computer, so I use it for banking and stuff, so I do realize the risk of not reinstalling if a backdoor has been installed... but I got all these troubles by clicking a ActiveX link I shouldn't have (it was hiding the info on a website and I didn't take the time to figure out how to make it go away without clicking to install the activeX) no one but me uses the computer.

so my thinking is that its not likely a backdoor has been installed, but that could be just plain niave...

anyhow, here's the new logs.

Okay, you handled the L2M infection quit well
Since we are not dealing with a rootkit we are going to do our utmost and clean your computer.
Follow these instructions:

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Internet Settings - C:\WINDOWS\system32\g6jolg1316.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download Silentrunners.zip Unzip it to your desktop and doubleclick on it.

Run the SilentRunners.vbs file. If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. It might say something like "Malicious Script Warning". This script is not malicious so you are safe in allowing it to run.

Let it run for about 1 minute, When it has finished it will produce a Startup Programs text file. Copy and paste that text file here in your next reply.

Download WinPFind.zip

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Please reboot as post a new HJT log as well.

Please look at a way to avoid trash on your PC!

Download unzip then scan RootkitRevealer

when its done go file > save
attach the log back here in your next reply
Not to worry, normal there are a lot of items.
Its an intensive scan, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.

Because the log can be very large please edit out items in C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT if there.
And C:\System Volume Information, before posting
Please look at a way to avoid trash on your PC!

your link to RootkitRevealer didn't work, so I had to go to the site directly to download... I ran it and it said "no discrepancies found", so no log file to post... thanks, Kevin
