I am having trouble with pop-ups, PUP's, and I have these green links all over the place that take me to random websites. Can you please help me. I have updated McAfee, Spybot S&D, Adaware SE, Microsoft Antispyware as well as windows but not much is coming up. A McAfee administrator suggested this so here is my log. Thank you for you help, it is greatly appreciated. My pop-ups occur anytime I am on the internet but only when I am on the internet. The green links are all over the place but only when I am on the internet. The green links usually are not even things that are supposed to be real links like McAfee.com the com part was green and it would take me to some random site. I have tried about everything that McAfee suggested on their forum and they have referred me here. I know I had the opanki virus but I believe I got rid of it. I know the problem came from a link that my sister sent to be to check out some pictures. I am an idiot and clicked on it and now I have been paying the price for the last week. I know I also had the Downloader-RK Trojan and viewpoint, smitfraud, surfsidekick, newdotnet, and Web Nexus problems. I have been using many tools from McAfee as well as the typical Spybot, Adaware, and Microsoft Antispyware. I have run everything in safe mode with system restore turned off and I am still having problems. Hopefully you can help, thanks again jfuller!

Hello jfuller,
welcome back to the forum

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please print out or copy these instructions\tutorials to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

First, we need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.

* Click Tools=>Settings.
* In the left pane Click Real-time Protection.
* Under Startup Options Uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
* Under Real-time spyware threat protection
* Uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
* Click Save button.
* Close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
* Right Click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar.
* Select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Download SmitRem.exe © noahdfear from one of these sites to your Desktop.
http://www.downloads...org/smitRem.exe
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20cou....php?id=1"

Double-click the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your Desktop.

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5. Install ewido anti-malware 3.5 and start the program from the icon on your desktop, then check for and download updates. Don't Run Yet.

Reboot to safe mode

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

logon to your user account.

Open the smitfraud folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. When the tool completes:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Hi jfuller,

Lets try something here to help up your PC.

One thing to keep in mind is that Ewido is a 14 day trial and does slow the PC down. So you can have the user use Add/Remove

next:

Please download System Security Suite. here.

http://www.forums.se...hread.php?t=318

Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Also please describe how your computer behaves now.
There will be more to do when I see the next post.<<<Some things to keep your PC clean
Your doing well
Good luck mschroe919

Hi jfuller,
Welcom back you did a good job following the instructions.
You are welcome and now is the most important thing. That is keeping your PC clean.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Note you may have some of theses programs allready, if so just a reminder to keep updated.

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
Managing Windows Millennium System Restorehttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html
or
Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial56.html

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
2. Change theDownload unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky...ne.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com...e.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. See link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.....jsp?lid=nav_za

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

http://net-integrati...sdtutorial.html

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Ad-aware:

http://russelltexas....e/adawarese.htm

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

NEXT:

delete all TEMP files there is a few ways to do this.
One way I found to be the simplest is go to Start, Run, In the run window type in %temp% and click OK
when Temp file opens go to top, click on edit, click on select all. Then press the delete button.

NEXT:

Empty recylcle bin.

Good Job jfuller
and good luck mschroe919

ok, my computer is running great so thank you. I do have one final questions, what should I do with everything that I downloaded onto my desktop? Should I keep all the programs, should I uninstall them? Thanks again for everything.

One more question. What should I do with everything I downloaded to clean up my computer like hijackthis, ewido, SDAT4689, smitrem, deldomains, 3ssetup104, and system secutiry suite? Should I keep all of these or move them from my desktop or uninstall them. Thanks, JFuller

Hi JFuller

It's up to you as to what to keep. The trail versions like Ewido, is a 14 day trail version. One thing to keep in mind is that Ewido is a 14 day trial and does slow the PC down.So you can go to controll pannel, use Add/Remove, Programs like SSS aren't hurting anything are are good programs to keep and run once in awhile.

Thanks mschroe919

mschroe919,

I have downloaded and ran hijackthis on my laptop now because I realized how poorly it was running after seeing how well my computer is running after you helped me clean it up so I am hoping you would be willing to look at this hijackthis log from my laptop. I have the usual programs on the computer. McAfee virus scan with personal firewall, privacy service, and spamkiller. I also use adaware, spybot search and destroy, and I have just recently downloaded spywareblaster. Howerver, I fear that I already have some problems because my computer is very slow especially on the internet and I get some pop-ups. Thanks for the time.

This computer has microsoft windows XP home edition with service pack 2.
1.11 GHz Athlon Processor with 448 MB of Ram.
