Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. I see little in this log, but the version of HJT is around two years or more old. There is a few items of clutter and this: microgaming.com X {AED98630-0251-4E83-917D-43A23D66D507} IESPYADS Restricted Site which should not be on the computer, and there may be more that I can not see with this old version. If you still need help, you can update from within the program like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. You can also download from here: http://www.merijn.or.../HijackThis.exe

I would also like to say that CPU issues can surely be caused by malware but often there are other reasons. You may want to ask the guys here to take a look, of course they would prefer I see the new log first to rule out malware as the source of the problem.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for the new log, I would like to give you a good cleaning and remove what I see that should go, we will see how your are running at that point. Let's proceed like this in the posted order.

1) I see SpySweeper, do you own this program? If yes I may want to see a sweep report later, if no, it is giving you nothing after the trial period and should be uninstalled to save the many resources it uses.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

You are running several spyware programs that may block our fix. They may need to be turned off?

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

7) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

Thanks...Phil

Yes I own Spy Sweeper. But for some reason Norton's 2005 and Spy Sweeper have issues for me. The only problem I still have after doing all this is my CPU still is slow to restart or shut down keep seeing an error program CPAPP wont close not sure if thats the file in Norton's or something added to my CPU by spyware/malware. But everything you asked me do ran smoothly. Thanx for your help.

Hi Mike, let me look over the logs you have provided, then I will comment on your feedback, thanks.

ewido anti-malware - Scan report Created on: 7:17:32 AM, 2/4/2006

It looks like ewido and you were able to deal with everything located. You might want to look hard at that list, that junk is getting on your computer somehow? I will offer additional security information once we have you clean. When I see that much junk, I usually ask ewido to take another look in safe mode, and we may do that later.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 7:41:16 AM, on 2/4/2006
Looks like this system was upgraded to XP.

Let's look at a few things, this one concerns me:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe [2]] C:\WINNT\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\ctfmon.exe
This is the information from CastleCops about the item:
http://castlecops.co...uplist-795.html
As you read, you will know if you need or use this, I am concerned that it is running twice, never seen that before. If you do not need it, and according to CC it is running from the correct position to be what it says it is, you may want to follow the instructions to remove it. Before you do that, why don't you use one or more of these free online scanners to make sure it is safe:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html
If you should fine two instances of it in C:\WINNT\system32\ folder, test them both.

I want to mention quickly that the 016/DPF ActiveX on the computer, if they are removed the next time you visit the site you will be prompted to update a new version, so you can look at those and use HJT to remove anything you do not require.

Ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

The balance of the HJT log looks great. On to your comments.

SpySweeper: is a good program and they updated recently to remove some of the Vundo trojans and Look2me infections. I would get that working right were I you. If you have the proper documentation you might try uninstalling and reinstalling. If this does not work, I would contact Webroot for instructions. If you do get it running, run a sweep and post the results, it sometimes shows stuff ewido does not.

Norton AntiVirus: Not a big fan, I get lots of issues with this program, but a lot of folks won't use anything else. It is very resource heavy and does not like to play well with other programs at times and may even be causing the SpySweeper issues?? This: "error program CPAPP wont close" I need more information about. The CPAPP looks a little suspicious but without more information, like a name or the pathway it is hard to tell you more. A google returned nothing. See if you can provide more information. This may be a good time to post to the "Other Computer Problems" to see if the guys there can suggest anything. Post a link to this topic so they can see what we have done, and let me know about the questions I have brought up.

Thanks...Phil

Did all that and now my CPU shuts down without a problem. Which program do you suggest? Someone told me Mcafee is better than Norton's.

OK Mike, if you are running well, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

The truth is the user of the program may be much more important that the program. I use McAfee on three computers and because I maintain and run the software often and have my protection well layered, I rarely have an issue. I installed free AVG on my sister new Dell because I knew I could set it and forget it. So...it's all about the user, basically. In case I have not covered it, just to make sure northing is lurking in System Restore looking for a chance to get back on your computer, System Restore does not know good from bad, it backs up everything. In case some of the infection got into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, restart your computer and turn it back on.
