My computer is running Norton System Works 2005 (upgraded with the latest from LiveUpdate at Symantec.com). I also have AdAware Personal, Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta 1.0, and SpyBot. Norton keeps telling me that I have a Download.Trojan on my computer at "C:\Windows\system32\browsela.dll", but it can't seem to remove it. I've run Norton in both Normal and Safe modes. I've even used the "System Explorers" function of Anti-Spyware Beta to no avail. I've run a Hi-JackThis log on my computer and have attached it below. Browsela.dll is listed under the "O20" section. Here is the log, any ideas?

Hello JoeLeB and Welcome to TomCoyote,

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Download win32delfkil.exe.
Save it on your desktop.
Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: win32delfkil.
Close all windows, open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat.
The computer will reboot automatically.

Post the contents of the logfile c\windelf.txt, along with a new hijackhislog.
as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Is there anything else I should do or be worried about? Also, it appears that Ewido put the 11 files it cleaned into "quarantine". Should I delete them?

Hello JoeLeB,

Things are looking better. Please do the following:

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware:
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable TeaTimer:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

STEP 1.
======
Open HijackThis. Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiccqw.exe reg_run
Click Fix Checked.

Show Hidden Files
Please show all files for your system.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Delete Files and Folders
Please delete the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiccqw.exe reg_run
If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Now please go into safe mode and run ewido again. Please do not use the computer while the ewido scan is running. Please save the ewido log.

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post (reply) with a new hijackthis log to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

A couple of things. First, I have re-enabled TeaTimer and Anti-Spyware System Agents. Second, Under your "Step 1" for HiJackThis, I was able to check the box next to the file O4...\wiccqw.exe reg_run, but when I got to the "Delete Files and Folders" section of your instructions, I couldn't find the file in Windows Explorer in either Normal or Safe Mode.

Also, in your instructions for "Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware" (not a problem for me as I knew what you wanted) the second step should be "Options, Settings" versus "Tools, Settings".

Here are the logs you asked for. First, Ewido:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido anti-malware - Scan report

+ Created on: 11:48:55 PM, 2/2/2006

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@com[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Com : Cleaned with backup

::Report End

Now for the latest HJT log:

Winpfind and Trackqoo Scans

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Don’t do anything with it yet!
  • Download Track qoo
    • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

Let’s see if Killbox will work on this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiccqw.exe reg_run

Download Pocket Killbox

Reboot into Safemode
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Copy and paste this entire path into Full Path of File to Delete
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiccqw.exe reg_run
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say No
Run HJT Scan Only and remove this line
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\yyyqyc.exe reg_run

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log.

Hello JoeLeB,

You got rid of that file!
Just a minor clean-up item then we can do the final clean-up.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.[br]To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msupdate - C:\WINDOWS\
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello JoeLeB,

How is everything running? Everything looks good now. Just one more thing--someone suggested to check to make sure you do not have any rootkits installed.

Blacklight

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure....light/try.shtml
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
Please post contents of log.

STEP 4.
======
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
    Test Firewall

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Visit the Microsoft Office Update Site Frequently-If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free)

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
