Please help !!!

Scott Mo
Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions.
THank you for helping. My problem is hopefully a simple fix. I type in a search topic into a browser such as google (ie. Boston Bruins) and I get the search results. When I click on one of the searches (ie. www.bostonbruins.com) I get directed to a ticket agency, then I hit back and try the link again and get directed to a different ticket agency. The third time I finnally get the web site I want. I've tried diffent topics and it always semms to send me to a ticket agency. I've checked the hosts file as well but it was clean. Adaware and spybot got nothing and cwshredder said I was clean. McAfee virus scan is also clean. Here is the log hope you can help.

THanks

Scott Morris

Hi Scott Mo;

It sounds like you are being Hijacked. Lets have a look in your HJT log and see if the culprit can be located.

If your Mcafee includes a full time Anti-Virus, please do not download another. Only one full time AV is advised, due to conflicts.

If you are not running any antivirus software, it is essential that you do so, as quickly as possible. Here is a link for a free AVG ANTI-VIRUS:http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

I see only one suspect entry/file in your Hijack This logfile. Lets see if fixing this will do the job.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmyqf.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmyqf.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode. see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmyqf.exe

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please advise if the problem has been resolved.

Please use the Add Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not edit the new HJT log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Piatan,
Thank you again for getting right back to me. I tried your advise. I was unable to find that program again in the HJT log and I could not find it on my hard drive. THe problem still exists though I tried the Royal Carribean website and got redirected to Vacations to go and I tried the Boston Red Sox website and got redirected to a memorabilia website. Below you will find my log. I hope you can Find other things to try. Hope to hear from you soon,
Scott

That entry/file does seem to be missing from this Hijack This logfile and no other entries/files look suspicious. Why it would just come up missing, is not known. Suspicious. Also, it is odd that nothing can be found with HJT, yet you are still being re-directed.

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Doing the above sometimes is the solution.

Since we are unable to locate the problem with HJT, I would suggest a series of online scanners and programs to download and use, to see if the problem can be found/removed.

If you have the latest Ad-Aware se and Spybot S&D and they were updated just before using, then disregard the direction below to use them.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed.

Reboot when done.

Next:
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

The trial version of Ewido works like a full featured version for 14 days, after that the only features that will not work are, autoupdate and realtime protection. It will still be able to be updated with the link above and be used to scan and remove undesirables.

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

    Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D; and install it.
    • Select Search for updates.
    • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
    • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
    • Then select Download updates .
    • Shut down and restart Spybot.
    • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
    • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
    .

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Please download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
    • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
    • Select your language and click OK, then next.
    • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
    • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
    • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
    • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
    • Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.
    • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.
Then in Internet Explorer click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please advise if the problem has been resolved.

Please use the Add Reply feature to post, so I will be notified.
THank you for giving me the tools to do a great cleaning of my computer. It took awhile but I found 5 viruses and 50 something infected objects. It was nice to get rid of that stuff but unfortunately I tried the MSN search browser and it still sent me to get bruins tickets. I hate to admit defeat but so far the hijacker is winning. I really apreciate all that you have done. Hopefully you have more tricks up your sleeve and if you would share them that would be awesome. Attached you will find the latest HJT log and the other log you suggested I send.
THanks again

Scott

Piatan: YOU ARE THE MAN ! Because of you I was able to take back my browser. After I sent you my hjt log I took a look at it and saw that funky file that disappeared was back , so this time I fixed the sucker. Then I downloaded the AVG anti-virus software you reccomended and got rid of the McAfee. When I ran the AVG it found 2 more viruses. I healed them and now no more hijacked browser. THank you thank you thank you! I will be more careful with my web browsing! Scott Mo
Hi Scott Mo;

Your latest post was good news indeed. However, there is something we need to do, due to something that Ewido revealed, which could have quite a lot to do with the problems you are experiencing.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmxqh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxqh.exe
Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmxqh.exe
If you were unable to find, or delete any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic, along with the report.txt from Fixwareout.

Please use the Add Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not edit the new HJT log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Thank you again for all your help! I ran the fixwareout and it said fixed then I ran the hijack this it did not find the file so I followed your instructions and even downloaded the kill software. Even that software did not find it. What did I do? Ive always been interested in computers. Was my computer infected with a very difficult virus or actually several? I was a computer science major way back inthe dark ages of computers. (the 80's) I've attached the reports that you asked for. Hopefully you can give the computer a clean bill of health.
THanks again

Scott Mo

Hi Scott Mo;

Your PC could have been a great deal more infested. Since we do have a fix for this variant, it can't be considered too bad.
Fixwareout did find a file that need to be looked at, that does not show up in the Hijack This log, so lets see what needs to be done with it.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK :
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMQPC.EXE

Lets check this files properties, to see if it is legitimate.

To check a files properties, Right click on the file and select "Properties". This will sometimes give you information such as the size, attributes, version number and often the maker.
From this you can often determine if it is good. If it doesn't tell you who made it and you can't find it in Google, it is probably bad. I couldn't find it using Google.

If it is found to be a Microsoft file, or from a source you know and trust, then leave it. If it is not, then use the following directions.

If it is found to be bad, or unknown, delete it. If you are unable to delete it then,

Use the security tab to take ownership.
Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
it first to different name+ext.
Example:
sqlneee.dll>bleh.txt
bleh.txt > badfile.111

You may also want to make sure that "read only" attributes is not checked, if you haven't already.
Once you have successfully deleted the file restart into Regular Windows mode.

If the file is found to be bad and you were unable to delete it, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Please run Ewido again and save the report, to be posted into this topic.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please advise if any issues remain unresolved.

Please use the Add Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.
Piatan,
Again you are the man. I found that program checked it out and deleted it then I ran Ewido and hjt the logs are below. Hopefully these logs will be good and boring ( no nasties).
Thank you
Scott Mo

Hi Scott Mo;
You're welcome. Good work deleting that file. Those can sometimes be challenging.

Both Hijack This and Ewido came back clean. I am so bored. ;)

If there are no continuing problems, I suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?
