The computer seems to run quite slowly. and Windows Media player and Macromedia Flash don't seem to work. Sometimes in WinMedia I get only sound, no pic. Anything in Macromedia doesn't work. Often, for no reason, the IE seems to go offline -- when you try to get emails into Outlook Express or surf to a page in IE, it asks if I want to go online now. Strange behaviors because I am on a wireless network. Here's the log. Thanks so much for looking at this for me. Hello Hasbro,

Welcome to the Tom Coyote forum, I need you to post the entire HJT log, as it is missing the top portion and not showing me the whole picture. I cant even tell if your using the latest version which is very important.

Open HJT Scan and Save a log file, when it opens in Notepad, go to Edit> Select All.....Edit Copy and paste the entire log in this thread by using the Reply button and not the New Thread button.

Make sure that HJT is version 1.99.1, if not you can download it via the links in my signature. If you are running HJT from a temp or zip folder, you will need to move it to its own folder.

DO THIS FIRST

We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Also use the links in my signature to download and install both Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 and Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Here are the setup instructions for both programs.

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.

When your done with this all, post a new HJT log and if we deem that your system is clean of any Malware or a virus, I can direct you to some excellent tech support sites that deal with windows issures.

Ken :D

Mr. Ken, you are the greatest! Thanks for responding to my post. It's my first one. Anyway, I did everything you said, and by the way, I already had the proper versions of HJT, SB and AA. Use them regularly. I appreciated receiving your good instructions on how to configure HJT. Hasbro,

I am not looking at anything earthshattering to suggest that you have a virus or any Malware installed. There is one line you do need to fix with HJT .

Open HJT Scan Only, close all open windows and your browser , put a checkmark in this entry and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

You should have the latest version of WMP 10, if not , you can get the new version , if you have the new version, try uninstalling it and reinstalling it. Windows Media Player 10

You can also install the latest version of Flashplayer Here

Lets try cleaning you up a bit, sometimes if you arent dilegent about maintenace your system can get clogged up. If after the cleaning things do not improve, it may be a windows issue and I will direct you to some excellent Windows Tech Support sites that deal with this sort of thing.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Mr. Ken, thanks for that quick response and all the great advice. Well, last night I defragged twice after posting here and before hearing from you this a.m. I try to do that all the time so am glad you mentioned it as I thought it was useful. I also always empty recycle bin, ditch everything in IE's Tools/Net Options/General, etc. I have never emptied Prefetch, so did that and appreciate knowing about it now. I will put that on my regular list. Just so you know, I also pretty regularly go to Start/Run and type in "%tmp%" and then hard delete everything that comes up that will delete. Hope that's an OK thing to do. I used HJT to delete that line. I got and ran CCleaner, and there were almost 150 issues fixed. Thanks and I will also run that periodically, along with Ad-Aware and SpyBot. Now, regarding the restore point, I followed your instructions precisely to the point where I was to go into Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance -- I have no "Performance and Maintenance". So, I went into System, chose the Sys Restore tab, and simply re-checked the box, clicking apply and OK. So, I did not ever actually do anything to create a new restore point and name it something. I hope you know why I have no "Perf and Maint" in my Control Panel, and know whether what I did automatically creates a restore point or not. Sorry to be a pest and keep coming back to you. When I have time this evening I will get a fresh install of WMP 10 and Flash. Okay, that's about it for now. I look forward to hearing from you about that restore thing. Thanks you so much for your time.

Hasbro,

When you open the Control panel, switch to Catagory View.

Cleaning out all the temp files your way is fine. As far as the prefetch, just do that everyonce in awhile.
Running CCleaner on a regular basis will keep your system nice and tidy.

Ken, that is what I did and I am all set now. Thank you for the explanation. I will use it for a day or two, and I will reinstall those two programs (Flash and WMP 10) tonight, and then hope that all is well. While working on this one, I thought it would be a good idea to have your group take a look at my main business computer's HJT log. It is devoted to business and does not get all the "surfing" that this computer gets, but as a preventive measure I would like to see what you think. Shall I post it here (since it's the same user) or start fresh, since it's a different log? Thanks so much

Okay then, I will ask my wife (who uses the computer most heavily) whether she thinks its speed is improved. I will post back in a few days to let you know. I would greatly appreciate any tips to good free software you might offer, as I have always avoided it all for obvious reasons. On both computers, I will now regularly use:

Ad_aware
SpyBot
CClean
Defrag
IE Cleanup (Tools/Options, etc.)
Dump all temp items
Dump all Prefetch items

...and anything else you tell me to get.

I did post the HJT log for my main business computer at the following spot:

http://forums.tomcoy...ndpost&p=258951

Thanks again,

Hasbro,

Dont ever install more than one Anti-Virus program, this is a case where MORE IS NOT BETTER But you can have pretty good array of Anti Spyware programs. I found out that on most systems installing a suite of programs that include a firewall, AV, Malware protection and so on seems to clog up a system. This is of course depends on the system but I tend to stay away from them. I just like a stand alone AV program and a Firewall.

This is what I have on my system and everything works fine.

Norton AV
Zone Alarm Free Firewall.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 <-- if you use the T Timer than skip Spyware Guard
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
IE-Spyad
Win Patrol
Ewido

Use mostly,

Firefox
Thunderbird Mail

You can skip the ones you have done already, its easier for me to post the whole thing.

* Download and Install CCleaner,
* Click on RUN TOOL
* This program is safe to run, but it will delete your cookies, so if there are any you want to keep,
* Go to Options> Cookies and move any you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

* When you run the Issues Scan before you click on Remove Selected Issues, it will ask you to backup the registry, Say Yes.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

I will keep this thread open to see how you do with WMP and Macromedia.

Ken, it's been a few days now and both my daughter and my wife who use that first computer agree that all is well. Much improved. I do only use one AV program on both computers -- Norton AV Corporate Edition. I find with that I don't have to keep renewing all the time. Seems to be completely automatic with both updates and scans, email scans, etc. Thanks for the complete list of all the other freebies and add-ons. I already use Mozilla's Firefox and T-bird exclusively on my business computer -- maybe I'll switch my wife's over, too, based on your comments. I'll print that thorough last post and keep it on hand for both computers. Thanks again for your time and expertise, Hasbro
