Prob #1: I've been invaded by something that elicits pop-ups from WinFixer 2006, WinAntiVirusPro, and AdultFriendFinder (I'm married, so this one is getting me in trouble with "the Boss"). I've been through a number of threads in this forum that sound like my problem, but I can't seem to apply the same fixes with any success. I've run the following utilities thus far: Microsoft AntiSpyware, Norton AntiVirus 2005, AdAware SE, SpyBot, eWidow, A Squared, Trojan Hunter, FixVundo.exe, & CCleaner. I also have Spyware Blaster continually running. They all find and remove junk, but the core problem persists. It is often suggested to run these utilities in Safe Mode, which brings me to...

Problem #2: When I reboot in Safe Mode, I get a black screen, no desktop. It just says "Safe Mode" in each corner of the display. I can pull up Task Manager w/ Ctrl+Alt+Del, but that's it.

Save the file to your desktop
Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the desktop
Read the introductory information, and then click Continue
Click Start
When asked if you want to continue, click Yes to run the fix
Click "Save Log"


Note: It is normal for the the fix to terminate by producing a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH so don't be concerned when this happens. It requires you to manually reboot to restore your normal windows desktop.

The log created by VirtumundoBeGone called VBG.TXT will be on located on your desktop. Please retain VBG.TXT.

Empty Recycle Bin.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file along with the VBG.TXT into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Wow! Thanks! Everything appears fine for the most part. No more WinFixer or the like, just an occassional pop-up related to the websites I was visiting during my trial run. Not to get too far off the subject here, but is it possible to have "too much protection"? Right now I have the following running at StartUp: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect, Microsoft AntiSpyware Real Time Protection, Spyware Blaster, Ewido Anti-Malware Guard, TrojanHunter Guard, and SpyBot S&D Resident SD Helper. I think I may have more than just the Microsoft firewall active as well (not sure how to check though). I just suspect there may be some redundancy that may impede efficiency.

As for what protection to have: You should only have 1 Anti-Virus program running at one time. Microsoft firewall only checks items coming in, not going out, so IMO, that does 1/2 the job.


I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Interesting... I was under the impression that Norton Antivirus needed to be supplemented with some of those other utilities that I mentioned previously for maximum protection. So should I disable all of them except Norton? I was thinking I wouldn't have gotten that Virtumondo bug in the first place if I had had something like Trojan Hunter Guard or Ewido Guard active all the time.

I don't know if Trojan Hunter Guard and Ewido Guard being active all the time, will conflict with each other. I was just saying you should only have 1 Anti-Virus program running at one time and I would use a different firewall.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.
