My homepage got hijacked a couple of days ago and neither Ad-Aware or Symantec Anti-Virus 10 could locate the culprit, even after updating both to the latest definitions. So now my homepage is stuck on MSN.com ( go figure!! ) and I can't seem to get rid of whatever is causing this. Here is the HijackThis log : Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:19:08 PM, on 1/20/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost\Agent\PQV2iSvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\NPROTECT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro\type32.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\point32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Professional\Ad-Watch.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mdmmdev.exe C:\Program Files\Azureus\Azureus.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\javaw.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\javaw.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0 CE\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: MIME Plugin Support Dll - {35B75950-9CA7-433B-A9E6-7E9B8266572C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mimecore.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Hello Wuudeee, welcome to the TC.

I suggest you do this:

use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
newdotnet

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: MIME Plugin Support Dll - {35B75950-9CA7-433B-A9E6-7E9B8266572C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mimecore.dll

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I tried to delete the NewDotNet program using Add/Remove Programs, but it wasn't listed. I think I might have already removed it when I realized my computer had been hijacked. I deleted the selections you listed using HijackThis and then Reboot the system, but my homepage keeps changing back to that dayam MSN website. The new log shows the entries are still deleted, so it must be something else in there that's screwing with my system. Everything seems to be functioning O.K. except for the homepage thing, but who knows what else it could be doing!! but my homepage keeps changing back to that dayam MSN website

That's IE's default start webpage. You should be able to click Tools> Internet Options> and change the home page.

It could be Ad-Watch that's stopping the changes:

This to Disable AdWatch

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:

Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

· From a computer that has Internet access, click on the following link:
http://www.new.net/s...install6_90.exe.
· Download and save uninstall6_90.exe to the Desktop.
· Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
· Click on the OK button.
· After removal, you may be prompted to reboot. Please reboot even if not prompted.

Let me know how it's doing now.

O.K. , I turned off Ad-Aware and ran the uninstall program you told me to download from the desktop. I rebooted the system and made sure Ad-Aware was still off when I changed the home site in the internet options. I worked until I turned Ad-Aware back on and it deleted the change in the registry. I had to turn off Ad-Aware and change the home page and then reboot with Ad-Aware still off. Then it asked me how to deal with the change. So my problem seems to be all cleared up, thanks.

Did you uninstall NewDotNet?

NewDotNet can cause you to loose your internet connection. Get winsockxpfix.exe just in case. Download it before removing NewDotNet.

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.
