Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.
I'm sure you are aware of this. I saw your other two posts.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

To post, please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions.

The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Piatan, thanks for answering. It's indeed obvious that you guys are swamped. I appreciate the effort and all that's done here. Now I can say that part of my computer has 'gone to Piatan'.
My problem would be that it seems to take ages for my computer to start up. Ages longer than it used to, anyway. Also, there appears to be some serious erratic behaviour going on lately. Programs seem to clog up, computer decides to mentally go walkabout, as if it's 'animated'. Also my adsl connection seem to have slowed down.
Generally speaking the problem would be 'weird behaviour, previously not seen'.

You may want to print this, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file, to place on your desktop and review as you work. Please read it all, before beginning.

Hijack This doesn't show us everything that is causing problems, no program does.
You may profit from running a series of tests and Programs designed to reveal and remove said problems.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro...call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky...ml?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
    http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=48

    Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.[list]
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Please download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.

Then in Internet Explorer click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Next:

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following.:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)

The following are OPTIONAL fixes:

Optional - FLASHGET I note in your log that you have FlashGet the download manager - be aware that the trial copy bundles Cydoor adware, but when you register the Ads disappear. To remove the program: Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it. Your call.

C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_all.htm
C:\Program Files\FlashGet\jc_link.htm
C:\PROGRA~1\FlashGet\flashget.exe (file missing)

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Here are some things that may help with your slow startup times. Give yourself plenty of time to do these, because they are terribly time consuming and you'll be changing settings, which can get tedious.

You have a good number of things in your startup. Loading them manually when needed could be worth trying.

Use the following links and see if it helps to determine what you want to run manually and what you want on automatic, or to put out with the trash.

http://www.microsoft...estoreperf.mspx

And here's another link to try.

http://reviews.cnet....-5554402-1.html

And another. Kellys Korner is a great site. To find startup problems, click the "S" in the alphabet of listings, then scroll down, almost to the bottom. It's a long way down and there are a lot of suggestions that will help, but it's quite time consuming.
Here's the link.

Hope this helps. :D

Pi,
I love it when a plan comes together.
Done the first part of yourt instructions, will most certainly try and deal with the startup stuff later. After I'd done as instructed the tape failed to selfdestruct. Hm, I'm mixing tv shows here, aren't I?

Seriously though, after I'd done as you said, I could not detect:
03-Toolbare etc.
09-Extra button: FlashGet etc.
09 - Extra 'Tools' etc.

Also, FlashGet was nowhere to be seen in the Control panel. I do however, have FlasGot [sic] as a firefox extension, or had rather, since I got rid of it. Is my computer correcting my grammar now, or what?
Anyway, here are the reports. Have a nice weekend and have one on me in the bar where the band plays behind chicken wire. (Somehow I think you're from Tejas.)

Hi ruud

The tape didn't self destruct ? Heads will roll, Mr. Phelps.

Tejas ? Isn't that Baja Oklahoma ?
Almost as good as spring in Amsterdam, I'm sure. Enjoy !!!!!

Back to the business at hand.

Your HJT logfile came back clean, as did the Ewido report.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.co...tlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a cold one on me and Safe surfing. :wavey:
