Hi. Would somebody mind taking a look at my HiJack This log? I had been free of Spyware for a while, but lately, had an attack. Anyhow, here it is. Thanks:

Hello and welcome back. I am sorry to report that you appear to have an issue :( First you are running HJT in C:\Program Files\ with no folder. Create a new folder called HJT and move HJT.exe, any logs or backups there into that folder. It will look like this: C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe.

Now you need to take a look at this item:
C:\WINDOWS\Keygen.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyVBApp] C:\WINDOWS\Keygen.exe

Here is the google on the executable: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…&q;=Keygen%2Eexe
and MyVBApp: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…LD:en&q;=MyVBApp

If you wish to check it, here are three free online scans:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Since you are running Symantec, once you know it needs to go, here is information and the Symantec removal instructions.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…irc.aimwin.html

Once you have removed the trojan, post a new HJT log so I can make sure it is gone.

Thanks…pskelley

pskelly, thanks so much for writing.

Okay, hmmm, I followed the Symantec steps:

1) turn off system restore
2) reboot in safe mode
3) full system scan
4) delete "windows" = in regsitry

However, after the full system scan - which took a mighty long time - no infections were found. And I could not find ""windows" = " in the registry. So keygen.exe is still in my Windows folder. Should I manually delete keygen.exe?

Here is my current log:

Thanks again for your help.
I would say that since Symantec posted the instructions it should have removed the item? I wander how they justify taking peoples money? :(
Since I gave you three links and you never said anything about having checked to be positive the item is bad, that you must not know it. Follow these directions to get it off of your system.

I also notice it is not showing in running processes this time, but is shown here: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyVBApp] C:\WINDOWS\Keygen.exe

I also see Spyware Doctor, woinder why it did not stop the item to start with? It may block this fix, so turn it off until you are finished.

Let's use ewido to see if it will kill it and finish with HJT and a check of the windows folder.

1) Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyVBApp] C:\WINDOWS\Keygen.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\Keygen.exe >>> file (if still there)

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

3) A good cleaner if you have none: Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan report and a HJT log, hopefully that will do it. Let me know how your are running.

Thanks…Phil :)
Okay, sorry for the delayed reply. I believe I covered all the steps you recommend in the last post. Here is my ewido log:

I deleted keygen.exe and so far everything seems to be running rather smoothly. Lemme know what you think about the above logs. Thank you so much, pskelly, for you help.
OK Honchie, the HJT log looks clean. Here is the item being picked up by ewido:
D:\honchie\downloads\Nero 7.0.12 eng Full Version + Crack.rar/Keygen.exe -> Not-A-Virus.BadJoke.Win32.VB.al : Cleaned with backup

Here is some information to help you control bad cookies in Firefox if you wish:
http://privacy.getnetwise.org/browsing/too…fdisablecookies
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/p…_priv_help.html

Since your log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources.
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner
for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off
completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

In case something bad got backed up in system restore, use this information get all clean SR files:

Safe surfing…Phil :wavey:

Thanks…pskelley
