hello all,

I've been infected by running what seemed to be a codec ...
I'm running Windows 2000 and I tried spybot, adaware and ewido to remove spyware. I also runned an avg full scan but it kept on going although I detected and removed things like Alexa.

After I had problems in safemode as well, I decided to format C drive (data on other partitions) and to reinstall win 2000 + windows updates > problem still occurs apparently ... I have strange things running like SMSS.EXE, CRSS.EXE, WINLOGON.EXE, SERVICES.EXE, LSASS.EXE + messages from kaspersky antivirus telling me I'm attacked from the Internet (Lovesan)

I also did an online scan using Kaspersky ... still no luck

I'm not an expert so I count on you guys to help me out because I want to be sure my PC is clean.

PS: english and french ok

here is my latest hijackthis log

After using tons of antispyware / maleware on my newly installed win 2000 in safe mode my antiviruses (AVG / Kaspersky / TrendMicro online scan do not detect anything anymore) ...

I am planning to upgrade to win XP but I want to be sure my system is now clean.

Thanks again for your reply

I've been infected by running what seemed to be a codec ...

Can you tell me more about this?

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINNT\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server /startmonitor
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [internat.exe] internat.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINNT\system32\internat.exe

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I downloaded what seemed to be codec (exe file) and ran it
Afetr that (before erasing C partition and reinstalling win2000) My IE kept going to http://www.needupdate.com/ with that text on the page:

Attention! Your system is under control of remote computer with IP address 227.4.167.118. The remote computer has access to the following folders on your PC:
- \WINDOWS\System32
- \Program Files\Internet Explorer
- \My Documents
- Drive C:\ files
Click here to download official anti-spyware software

I had 2 things in my toolbar that kept on saying that I was infected and prompting me to install a specific antispyware. One of them was an exclamation mark on a yellow triangle and the other was a red circle with a cross inside (looked blurred)

After the win2000 reinstall, I still had a message, but not in the toolbar anymore (grey system popup that was asking for download of random antispyware).

After running a bunch of antispyware in normal and safe modes ( + a few antivirus scan with various software in both modes as well (Panda online scanner/AVG/Kaspersky online and offline ...) nothing special anymore (I deleted a few things like Alexa (cf the post before your first answer) and Kaspersky has stopped telling me it successfully stopped attacks from the Internet.

My PC now seems to behave normally. Nevertheless, I am not an expert and want to be sure everything is clean now ... before reinstalling everything after upgrading to winXP to put a new firewall into service.

That's why your help is much appreciated ;o)

I completed the procedure you gave me:

1. hijackthis fix (deleted all files you mentionned ... what do I have to do with the backup created ?)
2. deleted C:\WINNT\system32\internat.exe
3. cleaned C and D drive disk (on the same hardware disk)
4. reboot and HijackThis san and log

Here is the new log

1. hijackthis fix (deleted all files you mentionned ... what do I have to do with the backup created ?)

You can now use Add/Remove Programs and remove HijackThis.

Good Job

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
