Mirar, Project1 & disabled Windows Firewall

LDTate - I could really use your help, especially if it as surgically accurate & comprehensive as b4 (different machine)

Problem: No suspicious activity until 12/29/2005 when "Project1" froze the OS, Mirmar toolbar appeared & Ad-AwareSE detected a few hundred (!) threats. I did the Ad-AwareSE then SpyBotSD cleans in regular and safe modes, got rid of anything not from MS/Sony/ATI/Symantec/(or other recognized source) with HJT. It appeared to be running cleanly.

Now here is where I got REALLY stupid: I noticed that Automatic Updates had been turned off, figured it was done by my chat-addicted daughter who uses this laptop, proceeded to update Windows, INCLUDING (long overdue) SP2. There was one error message after the final reboot that appeared to be a script error from the Windows update page, otherwise no probs.

Unfortunately, things must not have been clean. We now get return of Mirar, NAV Auto-Protect picks up "Holy[1].exe", there is a spawn of recently created files in the root directory, and I am unable to enable Windows Firewall (even after manually starting the disabled services) presumably due to spyware (per SpyBot).

Can you help me: 1) De-infest and 2) Get Security Center running properly?

What I have done so far:
Ad-AwareSE (in safe mode) - got rid of everything (Mirar & minor threats)
SpyBotSD (in safe mode) - SecurityCenter disabe/notify registry entries only found & fixed
Dumped cookies, temp files & offline content from IE
*Did not delete any other temp files*
Rebooted, logged on to TC, ran HJT & posted log file below.

Thank you, thank you. Awaiting your instructions.

Deleted folders and their contents in: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 which is where NAV keeps finding threats. Didn't see much point in posting a new HJT log. Still can't get settings for AutomaticUpdate to stick past a reboot, and still can't turn on Windows Firewall. Running faster though & back to surfing to see if anythings pops up. Tempted to try uninstalling then re-installing SP2 :blink: but would rather await your recommendations…
No real impact after re-running Ad-AwareSE & SpyBotSD a bunch of times, and doing very little surfing. Everything is back in force, especially Project1.exe and the Mirar junk. I did the following, but really think I need to "start all over with some expert guidance"! I'm posting a link in the >5 days form. Thanks.

Ran Ad-AwareSE & SpyBotSD, both required reboots to "get everything".
Disabled the following entries in selective startup to be able to make this post (but will need to get rid of these problems as well):
mrjj.exe
mrjj.exe (yep twice)
whSurvey
mlcwny
Rebooted & ran this HJT log (before signing in to forum):

Unable to stop the Local Security…. service, but disabled the startup and it does not seem to be there now.
Followed the other instructions.
No problems on startup - or so far.
Let me know if you see any problems with the (bloated) log below.
ALSO, how do I get rid of the items that I unchecked in selected startup (msconfig) as they still appear in the list?

Try this in Safemode as it may still be there, if its gone than :thumbup:

* Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
* Scroll down to Local Security Authority Subsystem Service
* Double Click that service to open it.
* Click on Stop Service.
* Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
* OK your way out of the program.

ALSO, how do I get rid of the items that I unchecked in selected startup (msconfig) as they still appear in the list?

Which items are you referring to??

Go to Start> Control Panel > Security Center and click on Change the way Security Center Alerts me.

I dont see a firewall on your system unless its part of Norton Secuity, if you do have Nortons, then disable the windows firewall.

You can reset windows updates to notify you but dont download and install them, then you will get the ballon come up when there available and you can download and install them when you wish.

Take the checkmark out of the Virus entry and you wont be bothered with that anymore since you have Nortons installed.

When done, post a new HJT log.

Ken :D
1)Local Security Authority Subsystem Service was "disabled" when I booted in safe mode.

2)In order to get onto the net without a barage of attacks, I had used msconfig to chose selective startup with the following items unchecked (since they all googled to bad guys). These items are still listed in the configuration. Do I just chose "normal startup", reboot, and see what happens, or do they have to be removed in some other way:
mrjj c:\windows\mrjj.exe
Mlcwny c:\program files\klmv\mlcwny
mrjj c:\windows\mrjj.exe listed x 2 !
whSurvey c:\program files\webhancer\programs\whSurvey.exe

Note: some of the source files still exist, but there are no keys in the registry under software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

3) "Go to Start> Control Panel > Security Center and click on Change the way Security Center Alerts me." This option is greyed out, as are the choices under configuration for Windows Firewall. A title bar says "For your safety, some options are controlled by group policy". Any changes I make to Automatic Update configurations don't stick past a reboot (have not rechecked this since your fixes). There is no listing for antivirus options as there are on our other PCs. Start> Control Panel> Security Center also says "Security Center" service has not been started or has been stopped. This laptop came with NortonInternetSecurity installed, but did not have the horsepower to run it, so it has long been uninstalled. I suspect this is either malware driven, or that a remnant from incompletely uninstalled NortonWare conflicted with the SP2 install.

neuro,

This option is greyed out, as are the choices under configuration for Windows Firewall.

You may have to be signed in as an Administrator to access that function.

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
* Type in Local Security Authority Subsystem Service
* Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

Make sure windows is still enabled to show all files and folders and boot into Safemode

Look for and delete the following files and folders in Red , if they wont let you, let me know and we can run a program to get rid of them.

c:\program files\klmv
c:\program files\webhancer
c:\windows\mrjj.exe

Reboot normally and go to msconfig and select Normal Startup and lets see what happens.

Ken :D
1) Logged on as Administrator; must be somethin else

2) I cut & pasted, and retyped the "Local Security Authority Subsystem Service" (as well as the short service name "Isass") but HJT keeps telling me: Service 'Local Sec….' was not found in the Registry. Make sure you entered the short name of the service., vbExclamation. It's still listed by services.msc, as disabled.

3) Deleted the offending files/folders, rebooted normally, HJT listed them as being loaded (!), I checked/fixed them, rebooted, and now they are not listed by HJT or as options in slective startup. :) but not yet :D ….

Here's a new log. BTW, looked at your site (GREAT :thumbup: ) and am anxious to do the beyond basic clean steps once we are done and have a firewall active. I am looking for info on Norton-SP2 conflicts.

Jamie,

Local Security Authority Subsystem Service <– well its gone not a problem.

Logged on as Administrator; must be somethin else <– I ran accross this before, but its been a long day, I will try to find out more info on it tomorrow.

Your log looks ok by the way. :thumbup:

Ken :D
Thanks… to you! It has been a long day, but very productive from my perspective. I'll post back if (when) we get mal-activity for more help, or if it looks really clean for your suggestions on how to keep it that way. If you get info on the Firewall greyout I would very much appreciate it; (my money is on leftover services from NortonInternetSecurity, which I may systematically disable from startup). Time to get some ^_^ ^_^ ^_^
neuro,

I read that using the System Restore feature MAY SOMETIMES correct the greyout out Security Center, the only bad thing is that it will reinfect you all over again, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. I am posting you a list of tips and free programs to use to help keep you more secure, I would hold off on the System Restore feature until you get that issue resolved with the Security Center. This is a real touchy situation, you need to have access to the Security Center but I dont want to see you get infected again.

I am going to list a few Windows tech support forums that deal with that sort of thing, so hold off on SR, there may be away around it that I am unaware of, once its fixed, then run SR.

Sometimes when you get infected with a virus or malware, it plays havoc on your system, even though the virus is gone , it may have left behind some damage. This is why it is so important to have your OS updated with all the latest patches to help keep all the garbage out.

Here in info on the firewall.
http://www.manac.com.au/forum/win/xpfirewall.html

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Local Settings/ Every User on this Computer
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote, I will keep this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions or concerns.

Ken :D
Like I said, right now its a touchy situation, on another forum they may advise you to use that feature to fix the the greyed out Security Center from not working, BUT by doing so, you take the chance of reinfecting yourself all over again as all the garbage we cleaned out is backed up in that program. If you get help on the Security Center issue and they advise you to use System Restore, I would let them know that we just removed a virus and malware from your system and if there is another way around it.

I think if I was you , I would hold off on that and wait until you get your issue resolved with the Secuity Center and then I would definetly clean it out and set a new restore point.

Hope this helps,

Ken :D
