Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Sorry about the wait, seems the posts far outnumber the volunteers. Since it has been a week since you posted and things change quickly on an infected computer, please do this if you are not being helped elsewhere.

1) Give me as much information as possible about your problem, especially any error messages you are receiving "word for word".

2) Use these free online scanners to find out what this is: c:\syz_dat\systray.exe
and post the results of the scans for me to view.

Hi there, Thanks for your reply. I checked for the file c:\syz_dat\systray.exe and wasn't able to find it anywhere. Made all hidden files visible but couldn't see it. However, it still shows up in the HJT scan. It didn't show up as anything hostile in any of the scanning sites you sent me to. I did a google search and it shows up quite infrequently, usually in other hjt sites. However it seems to be linking in some way to a porn dialer. The symptoms that keep showing up are in Spybot scans: Advertising.com 4 entries tracking cookies Doubleclick 1 entry tracking cookies Fastclick 2 entries tracking cookies Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify 1 entry registry change Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify 1 entry registry change These come up with each fresh reboot. I'm especially concerned about the antivirus and firewall disable notify changes in the registry. I'll post a fresh HJT log from a fresh reboot in about 10 minutes. G4U

I am 99.9% sure it is bad, and since it is showing in the log it is somewhere on your computer and you are the only one who can locate it. Look at these instructions again and make sure you did not miss something:

MANUAL INSTR FOR ENABLE HIDDEN FILES
* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
Now use Search Companion, if it is on the computer it will find the file no matter where it is. We will need the location to delete it at some point.

I have no idea why Spybot is not removing these cookies, I suspect Ad-aware or ewido will kill them;

Please follow these instructions, even though you may have run these before, I want you do do it again and run as suggested with the configuration suggested.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")


3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:

Thanks very much for all your help. Finally it seems that the syz_dat program is gone. I never was able to see it anywhere other than in the hjt log. It must have some invisibility setting. When I used the online scanners I never did get a "file not found" message, so I imagine it must have actually been there, just invisible. As you can see, it seems to be gone now from the HJT log.

Looks good, all in System Restore, use the information in the link I posted at the end of the instructions above and get clean System Restore files.
Keep in mind ewido is a good program, uses some resources as you would expect from a security suite. If you do not purchase it you can still update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but do turn the program off after the trial to save those resources.
