Okay I hope I'm following the correct procedure here as I'm new to this.

I have a Toshiba Sattellite laptop running Windows XP

Just recently the logon time has become interminably long, about 1 time in three it starts up normally (after a considerable wait...) The rest of the time it hangs after I logon the normal applications fail to start, and I am forced to give up and shut down.

The computer starts perfectly in Safe Mode.
When it does start normally it runs fine after all the startup applications have loaded.
Note that the problem only seems to occur after logon, there is no noticable delay in the general boot time.

Curiously whilst hanging the task manager will start and allow me to shut-down normally...
I have been through the Windows XP startup and shutdown troubleshooter meticulously and to no avail...
I have run an up to date virus scan in safe mode...
I have run the latest Adaware and Spybot SD in safe mode and normal mode...
As a last resort I have disabled many of the programs I thought might affect startup, or uninstaled them completely.

I am now at a loss, so I have run Hijack this and come to this forum and this is the log:

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. This is a new one on me, but here is the information I am finding on this junk.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe
http://castlecops.com/o23list-696.html
This is probably what it is: Backdoor.Iroffer / Backdoor.Noer

O23 - Service: NTLOAD - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe (file missing)
NTLOAD X ntsrv.exe Flagged as Backdoor.Iroffer / Backdoor.Noer
NTLOAD X winlogon.exe Other files in the same directory identified as Win32.Iroffer.b by Kaspers

O23 - Service: NTSVCMGR - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe (file missing)
NTSVCMGR O winlogon.exe Creates a file win32.dll C:\windows\system32\ and the old one is renamed win32.dll.bkup
NTSVCMGR X winlogon.exe Other files in the same directory identified as Win32.Iroffer.b by Kasperksy
NTSVCMGR X ntsrv.exe Flagged as Backdoor.Iroffer / Backdoor.Noer

If you wish to check any of this stuff before we remove it, use these free online scans.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

Since I have not worked with this infection before, I would like to proceed like this, if you have any questions, post them:

TeaTimer may interfere with out fix, use these instructions to turn it off:
http://russelltexas....re/teatimer.htm This junk seems to attract more, I suggest except for the time needed to download and troubleshoot the problem, you keep the computer offline as much as possible until you are clean.

1) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

2) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report. <<< very important
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3) We must disable and then delete these three services. I will post them one at a time, but you may do them at the same time if you wish. Disable all three, then delete all three.
I also will say since I have not removed these before, ewido may kill them. We will have to see how it goes.

Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to NTBOOTMGR and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type NTBOOT and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
_______________________________________________________
Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to NTLOAD and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type NTLOAD and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
_______________________________________________________
Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to NTSVCMGR and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type NTSVCMGR and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
_______________________________________________________

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {01E69986-A054-4C52-ABE8-EF63DF1C5211} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0096CC0A-623C-4829-AD9C-19AF0DC9D8FE} - (no file)
O23 - Service: NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe
O23 - Service: NTLOAD - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: NTSVCMGR - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe (file missing)

(the 023 items may be gone after you used HJT to delete them. If not there, don't be concerned)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe >>> file

I am not sure if we should delete more than the file, take a look to see what is the the driver folder, it may only have the two files in it? Let me have any information you can provide.

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi pskelly,
Before I start I want to say thanks for your response,
This thing is driving me mad... and I very much appreciate the help you are giving me

Firstly I should mention that given that it is Christmas, tomorrow (Christmas Eve) is the last time I will be able to check my email until the 7th of January, as I am tied up with the usual festive commitments.

As such please don't think me rude if I do not respond to anyposts in the intervening period, I will be attending to this as soon as I return in the New Year...

Now for the problem-
Before I start, I should state that I still have a problem with hanging start-ups, with about the same ratio of startups which succeed (approx. 1 in 3). So I guess it hasn't worked.

Nevertheless I have completed all the steps which you asked me to perform, as you stated (I trust this is reflected in the logs posted below).

Everything went exactly as you said it would except for one thing, the item which you were interested in towards the end of your instructions. Specifically locating and deleting these files:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe >>>> file

&

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe >>>> file

The fact is I could only find and delete the first of these - ntuser.exe
I could find no trace of the other one.

I sincerely hope that I was not just being stupid as I would hate to waste your time...
After enabling all hidden files and folders, I looked firstly by right-clicking Start and then clicking on Explore as you said. Then when I couldn't find them I use the search function to scan the whole C:\ drive for the second executable - all to no avail. It just wasn't there.

I don't quite know what the implications of this are, so I figured I'd better mention it.

In addition to the ntuser.exe (now deleted), the following is a list of the other items I found in the folder(I don't know if this is useful to you):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\

DAP (folder)
asdfsafdsadf.tasedfasd.txt
copy(2)of5.txt
cygcrypt-0.dll
cygwin1.dll
Driver32.dll
servicelogon.dll
servicesmgr.dll
svchostlogon.dll
win32.dll
win32.dll~
winlogon.dll

Anyway the logs you requested are as follows:

OK James, A couple of things first. 1) You HJT log shows no evidence of any malware. 2) We run ewido to look for malware that HJT can't see. You see your results, one item that ewido allowed you to clean up. I will on ask this one time, I have never in 100's of times using ewido seen only one item in the first run. If perhaps you did not save the first log, I really need to see it and can probably show you where it is in the ewido folder. If this happened, information in the first report could be very valuable. You will have to let me know if this could have happened.

From the beginning, I have had my doubts about this being a malware problem and you will probably have to post elsewhere at this site or another that I will offer to get help with these problems...we will see. Let me cover your feedback now.

Firstly I should mention that given that it is Christmas, tomorrow (Christmas Eve) is the last time I will be able to check my email until the 7th of January, as I am tied up with the usual festive commitments.

What I want you to do, if your issue is not resolved by then, I will place this topic on hold as of today, and when you are able to concentrate on resolving the issues, what ever they are, you post to your topic letting me know this, along with a new HJT log and the information I have asked about the (possible) first ewido scan report. We will start at that point. Give me any information then that you think might help, especially any error messages "word for word".

Before I start, I should state that I still have a problem with hanging start-ups, with about the same ratio of startups which succeed (approx. 1 in 3). So I guess it hasn't worked.

I must say that I do not believe this is a problem being caused by malware. I rarely do any troubleshooting of this nature anymore, but I may be able to direct you to where you can get answers, we will wait until you are available before we start.

Everything went exactly as you said it would except for one thing, the item which you were interested in towards the end of your instructions. Specifically locating and deleting these files:

Not to be concerned, I often schedule the removal more than once, that is why I posted in red that his might happen. Any of the tools I have you run, including HJT may have remove items before you got to the part where you were looking for the files/folder. As long as you do not miss them. This is one reason I asked about the ewido scan report, it always removes more than one item, even if they are just nasty cookies.
and as far as the files, all we wanted at that point were the two files I highlited in red. The others are good, and it is far from unusual for a bad file to wind up in a folder of safe files. As far as I can see, everything went as I thought it would. I had never seen exactly this kind of infection which was why I provided all of the information I did, and offered you access to online scaners to check, even though I was sure of what needed to go. Now we have the problem, of having all malware indicators we are using indicating you are clean. Once you are ready, I will do my best to point you to help for this problem.

Enjoy Christmas and the New Year celebration and post when you are ready.

Thanks...Phil

Okay Phil,
I'm back and can devote my time to sorting this problem out now. Before we start, Happy New Year. Sorry I was away a little longer than I hoped.

So let me address the queries you had in your last post.

Firstly re: The Ewido scan log.

I am absolubtely sure that I sent the log of the first and only scan that I did with this software.
I have double checked the Ewido program folder and will take another look under your instruction if you'd like.

I tend to be pretty fastidious about dealing with spyware and the like and regularly run SBS&D and Adaware using the configurations reccomended on this forum.
Running these was one of the first things I did when I noticed the problem, so could this account for the distinct lack of activity in the Ewido log.

I am happy that the computer is now clean of malware, and must confess that I have always suspected that there may be more to this problem. Although I should note the the problem is marginally reduced since we swept for malware before Christmas... Startup is still slow and the average interminble hang on startup a little less regular - starts first time anout 50:50 (as opposed to 1in3).

If this isn't a malware problem I guess we may be parting company soon, so I'd like to thank you for your help so far, and only hope that you may be able to point me in the direction of further help elswhere. In the meantime here is the most up to date HijackThis log:

Hi James, I hope your holidays were all great one also. I had a look at the new log and had to investigate a few exotic items but can't find anything in the log. We already know what ewido finds. I should mention that I see ewido running in services. Unless you purchased this progam it is just wasting resources after the trial and should be turned off. You can still update and use the scanner for as long as you like resource free.

Since it does not appear that this is malware, I am going to make some suggestions that may or may not help.

1) I looked back and my first thoughts are an out of date driver, and it only takes one to skrew up things:
http://www.cyberwalk...g00/310800.html
http://support.micro...b;en-us;q322205
http://www.pcpitstop.com/

2) Here are some ideas for speeding thing up:
http://vlaurie.com/c...s/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrind...rs_article.html

3) You might want to look at all of the applications you are running to see what you can use: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ to turn off some. This information will help you investigate what is running:
http://www.answersth...es/tasklist.htm
http://www.pacs-port...artup_index.htm
http://computercops....tartupList.html
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/

4) Since you say you have been though the troubleshooters I will offer just this:
http://www.kellys-korner.com/ sometimes ideas are found here and no where else.

5) Last I suggest you post here: http://forums.tomcoy...hp?showforum=83 Folks there are very good at what they do. It would be good to link them to this topic so they can see what we have done so far. I suggest you give them as much information as you believe my be relevant, especially any error messages you are receiving "word for word". I'll close this topic after a couple of days, and watch your new topic to see what they can come up with, and what I can learn.

6) I will leave you with this information:
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks...Phil

One quick reply before you close the topic, Just to say thanks, for all your help and supports. I haven't come accross another forum, which is so helpful with regards to troubleshooting, or for that matter, so patient and unassuming with regard to the users level and ability in computing. So once again many thanks, and now off for round two, should be fun... All the best, J. :wavey:

Since over a week has passed with not response, It seems no one at OCP knows what to do with that issue. Here are some troubleshooting ideas from Google:
http://www.google.co...angs on startup

http://www.google.co...troubleshooting

And you might try running a free diagnostic at PCPitStop. Those folks will help understand the result of the report in the second link.

Diagnostic: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Results: http://pcpitstop.inv...php?showforum=6

I hope this helps, I will close this topic...Phil
