I had trouble getting rid of norton antivirus so i got into the registry and may have made things even worse. spy bot s&d removed several trojons but i'm at a loss as to fixing the mess i might have caused in the registry, no text in yahoo messenger, no delete function in yahoo mail, blank screen for hotmail, no conection to windows update, no options for windows search(from the start menu),,, which also includes windows media player not functioning, (internal application error), 7 instances of svchost.exe processes running. these are the things i've found so far, could be more. please let me know if this info is enough to tell if the damage is beyond repair without formating....thanks, R

I had trouble getting rid of norton antivirus so i got into the registry and may have made things even worse. spy bot s&d removed several trojons but i'm at a loss as to fixing the mess i might have caused in the registry, ie: no text in yahoo messenger, no delete function in yahoo mail, blank screen for hotmail, no conection to windows update, no options for windows search(from the start menu),,, which also includes windows media player not functioning, (internal application error), 7 instances of svchost.exe processes running. these are the things i've found so far, could be more. please let me know if this info is enough to tell if the damage is beyond repair without formating. my hjt log is posted at other forum, hoping someone can give me a hint as to whether or not to format...thanks, R

jtech, You have to be patient. I took a look at your log and there is some malware present, however absolutely no reason to format! I'm sure the experts in the HijackThis-forum will help you get your PC in good shape as soon as possible.

perhaps this site is just too complicated for me or the problems are too complicated to get a response as to the severity of them. my log has been posted since 12/6/05, it's now 12/18/05. i tried the link for the over 5 day no reply. if anyone has looked at my info and replied, i have no idea where to find it other than trying to go back in the forum to find the original post and see, which i've done. is there a better place to find the replies? the replies i got did not address the log or solutions. i feel there is a great deal of help to be had here but that maybe i'm just not getting how this all works,,,,,please help, thanks, R

jtech,

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry about the delay, please do not start any new threads, just reply to this one using the REPLY BUTTON and not the NEW THREAD BUTTON. Other wise your posts are all over the forum and it is hard to keep track of you.

If you have not resolved your issue and still need my assisstance, please post a new HJT log into this thread as your system may have changed since your last post.

jtech,

It looks like we are on the same page at last. :D You have quite a bit going on here, lets do this.

You should print this out as we will be disconnected from the internet for part of the fix

Use the link in my signature to download and install AD-Aware SE Personal 1.06, after installation, check for updates, then close out the program, don't run it yet.

Set it up this way
* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Close out the program

Download and install Ewido security suite. This is the 30 day evaluation copy.
Ewido Security Suite
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program

We need to Disable System Restore, we will re enable it when we are done.

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Enable windows to show all files and folders

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now while in Safemode, click on Ewido to open the program
[*] Click on scanner
[*] Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
[*] You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
[*] Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
[*] Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
[*] Click Save report.
[*] Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily. I will need you to post the report into your next reply.
[*] Close ewido security suite.

Now Open up Ad-Aware
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

While in Safemode, open HJT Scan Only and put a checkmark in these entries, close all open windows and click on Fix Checked.

look for and delete the following files in RED

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svcpack.exe
msinfo.exe <-- This one you will have to do a search for

Reboot your computer normally

TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* UN-Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Now create a new RESTORE POINT

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point You can name it anything you like

Lets run a couple of online virus scanners, have them set to auto clean or to fix all if it gives you that option

Panda will let you save a report, do so and post it into the next reply

Panda Active Scan
Trendmicro Housecall
BitDefender Online Scan

I need you to post the results of Ewido, Panda Active Scan and a new HJT log please.

hi ken, i followed your instructions as best i could. the file svcpack.exe was not there but svcpack.dll was (i left it alone). my search tool is still not working so i couldn't find msinfo.exe either, did do a reg search and found none either. i had to find system restore thru accesories/system tools/ system restore to properties to find target to rstrui.exe to a blank screen at system restore. properties-startin %homedrive%%homepath%.
panda did not send the page for evaluation software, bitdefenter also seemed to have a dead link. housecall did load and find an uncleanable virus infected file and i removed it, but did copy the location and all info on it incase ya need it, it was advera.a.... i didn't mention it before but still have that "about:blank" in the internet options box. here's the hjt log and ewido, hope ya can figure something out.

jtech,

Is this your ISP ???
http://m33access.com/

Just a word
of warning, unless your an Windows Expert ( and dont feel bad if your not = there are even people at Microsoft who are not experts )
Dont Ever Go Into The Registry and Change Anything.

I still see Norton Security Suite running on your system, you should never have two anti virus programs running at the same time.

I am unclear as to what you did, you have Norton Internet Security Suite installed, did you just remove Norton Anti Virus or the Whole Security Suite ????

I think what I would do is to remove Norton from the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. If it wont let you uninstall it, or if its not there, you may have to re install it to be able to remove it. While your doing this, you may have to shut down AVG so as not to interfere.

Your log shows no evidence of any Malware or a Virus. Not to say that something could be hidden that we are not seeing.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here
Scroll to the bottom of the page and intall the 4.5 trial and not the free online scan.
Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address,
it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C.
Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer, and then please copy and paste the SpySweeper log into this thread, along with a new HJT log.

If you cant remove Norton and Spysweeper shows you as clean, I am going to direct you to some free tech support sites that deal with windows issues.

Ken :D

hi ken, yes my isp is m33access. here's the ss report and hjt log. ss did find things as you can see but still have same trouble. still unable to completely delete norton security suite, it doesn't show in add/remove, not sure where else to go to get rid of it....understand what you say about the reg, but sometimes frustration leads to danger :)......hoping to learn how to get around this stuff safely, (without formating) thanks for being patiant with me.

jtech,

Did you download the trial of Spysweeper or the free online scan ??

Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc , scroll down and look for this SPBBCSvc, right click on it and click on Stop Service and then change the Startup Type to Disabled.

Post a new log and let me know about Spysweeper and how your computer is running since we disabled Norton.

jtech, just wanted to let you know I will be offline from about noon tomorrow until Tuesday AM

Ken :D
