I don't see a Anti-Virus program. Here's a free one:

Click the link and Download, Install, Update and run a full scan.
http://free.grisoft....ree_323a539.exe

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

Hi LDTate,

Sorry about the delay but things have been very hectic during the festive season.
Many thanks for your help.

I have been running an antivirus program called Clamwin which may not be very effective.

I have downloaded AVG antivirus as you suggested and have found it to very good. During a scan it located and isolated 2 files with Trojan Horse Backdoor.Small.27.AQ. These files are held in the "Vault" do they need to be cleared and if so how is this done.

I have also empied out the recycle bin and rebooted as you suggested.

Current symptoms for my computer are:-

Popups occuring every 1-2 minutes while on line, they need to be clicked on several times before they will cancel, some of the popups read:-

Messenger Service
Message from System to alert
Stop Windows requires immediate attention etc.
Found 47 Critical errors

Messenger Service
Registry Damage

You have a W32/Hwbot-A Worm

W32/Hwbot-A copies itself to the Windows system folder with the filename HWCLOCK.EXE and creates a service with the following characteristics so as to run itself on system startup:

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Are you still getting those pop-ups?

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

O23 - Service: Hardware Clock Driver (hwclock) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete this file if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hwclock.exe

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

LDTate,

When I go into "Delete File on reboot" I cannot locate the file hwclock.exe in the System32 folder.

I did a search in Windows Explorer but it said this file does not exist however it keeps coming up when I do a scan in HijackThis.

What does the (file missing) bit mean?

All other instructions were carried out as per your post,
below is a copy of my latest HijackThis Scan which still contains hwclock.exe

Popups are still occuring when on line as per my previous post.

I did a search in Windows Explorer but it said this file does not exist however it keeps coming up when I do a scan in HijackThis.

What does the (file missing) bit mean?

It means it's hidden from windows so you can't find it to delete it.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in hwclock tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Close Regedit.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

LDTate,

carried out your instructions per your previous post,

During the regedit find process, I found 3 locations for hwclock.exe these were deleted however they did not appear in recycle bin when I went in to empty. Is this OK?

Also during the regedit find process, I found:-

A folder called LEGACY_HWCLOCK
A sub folder called 0000 containing ab service REG_SZ hwclock
A folder called HWCLOCK containing 9 files.

Should all these be deleted as well?

I'm still receiving popup from messenger service - 7 while writing this post
